Finally MyBlog2Day has been moved to new hosting, the most reliable web hosting – Hostgator. I had experienced the most terrible time while transferring my blogs to Hostgator, I had no experience on how to transfer a blog to new web hosting, that was why my blog was down for 2 days, but it’s fine now, otherwise I’ll not be able to write a post here. Transferring blogs to new hosting was really exhausted, it took me many hours to complete the transferring process, end up I request Hostgator to do it for me.
The reason I moved my previous hosting to Hostgator is because of the slow loading speed and frequent server down, it really pissed of my readers and myself as well. A few of my readers told me that they need long time to load my blog, and the server was always down. You know, I won’t be here if there is no reader to support me, so I want my readers to have good time while visiting and reading my blog. That was why I move to Hostgator, since it is reliable and I’ve yet to listen any bad comment about them.
10 Steps How To Move Your Wordpress Blog To New Web Hosting
First, I thought transferring blogs to new hosting will be quite simple, but it required quite a few steps to follow before we can really transfer the blogs. I was having hard time this 2 days, so I would like to share how did I transfer my blogs to Hostgator successfully, so that newbie can be following the guide before moving on too.
Here is a step-by-step tutorial on how to transfer blog to new hosting :
1) Upgrading To Latest Wordpress Blog Version
You need to upgrade your wordpress blog to the latest version if you tend to use Fantastico to install the wordpress script in your new web hosting because Fantastico will install the latest version for you. If your wordpress blog has different version, when you upload your old blog folder to the new web hosting, they can’t be matched.
2) Backup Your Files And Folders
You need to backup your old wordpress blog before moving on, usually people will only backup /wp-content folder because they store all the images, plugins, themes, and etc in this folder. If you have any other files or folders, backup it as well. For me, I used to backup the whole blog’s folders in case I missed out any important folder, at least I still have a copy of it.
3) Backup Your Database
I’m just like a newbie in transferring hosting, I just knew the purpose of the database. Database keeps all the settings for your site, posts, themes and etc. Backup your database from your old web hosting’s control panel, under phpMyAdmin, you can read how to backup your database by following the step-by-step tutorial from Wordpress team.
4) Addon Domain In Your New Web Hosting’s Control Panel
So now you need to add an addon domain in your new web hosting’s, so that you’ll have a folder for the blog that you want to transfer. You can do this from your new web hosting’s control panel.
5) Change Domain Name’s Name Servers
You need to change the name servers for your domain name to the new name servers that provided by the new web hosting company by using your domain registrar control panel.
As an example for Hostgator’s name servers, they are “ns1075.hostgator.com” and “ns1076.hostgator.com“. DNS propagation will take some time to complete, it took only few minutes from my experience, if it’s completed then you’ll not be able to access to your blog anymore, or you can clarify this with the new web hosting company, then you can proceed to the next step.
6) Installing New Wordpress Blog In New Web Hosting
Before installing a new wordpress blog in your new web hosting, you need to access to your new FTP server to see whether it’s accessible, if yes then you can start installing a new wordpress blog in your new web hosting by using Fantastico, it takes you few seconds to complete the installation.
7) Upload Files And Folders
Login to the FTP server, upload the old /wp-content folder and re-write the new /wp-content folder. I used to upload the whole blog folders and re-write them, I didn’t face any problem.
8 ) Upload Database
You need to upload your previous database to the new web hosting by using the phpMyAdmin in control panel. Remember that database keeps all the settings of your site, posts, comments, themes and etc, it’s important to keep a copy for your previous database, otherwise you need to do all the setting all over again.
You can only upload database that is not more than 52mb, I had a 12mb database and it took quite long for me to upload, so I request Hostgator to upload it for me. You can contact your web hosting company technical support to see whether they’re willing to import it for you.
9) Connect Your Wordpress To The Database
You need to connect your fresh installed wordpress to the previous database, you need to open wp-config.php in the root folder and change the database name, username and password to the previous database’s details.
10) Completed!
So you’ve completed moving your blog to the new web hosting, if you follow the 9 steps above correctly and your blog should work like usual now.
Conclusion
I was really sad to see my blog was down for 2 days, the traffic dropped 95%, but I believe that the traffic will be going back to normal in this 2 days, as long as the blog can be transferred successfully to Hostgator.
Moving your wordpress blog to new web hosting is not complicated, you just need to follow the steps and you won’t be having any problem. In fact, Hostgator will help to transfer your primary domain that you use for the hosting only, MyBlog2Day is not the primary domain, but after having conversation in Live Chat with one of their technical support staff, he agreed to help me transferring MyBlog2Day instead of the primary domain, he is really a kind person.
I requested Hostgator team to transfer MyBlog2Day instead of other blogs because MyBlog2Day has tons of images, plugins and files, I was having hard time transferring them, it took me approximately 10 hours to complete the transferring process, so I stopped it immediately and requested Hostgator team to do it for me. If I want their help to transfer other blogs, there is a charge for that, that was why I prefer to transfer other of my blogs myself since the files are not as large as MyBlog2Day.
Anyway, Hostgator’s Transfers Department and customer services were really cool, I didn’t request them to do so but the person in charge sent me a few emails to update me the transferring process, this was what I appreciated. I strongly recommend Hostgator to all the serious bloggers!

The only problem i’m having with hostgator is adding new domain names. I’m hosted with the baby plan and it says that I can add as many sites as I want, but the problem is that they don’t really have videos or anything on how to do that.
So Anyone know how to do that? Lee any idea how to do that?
Thanks,
Teen Blogger´s last blog ..Top 5 Critical Mistakes Bloggers Make
@Teen Blogger,
Go to your control panel and look for “Addon Domain”, before this you need to buy or register a domain at godaddy.com or any domain provider, then points the nameservers to Hostgator. After this, add your domain name in “Addon Domain”, then you can start creating your site or blog with the domain.
If you have any more question about this, shoot me an email at kahoong_lee@hotmail.com, I can help you with this.
Thanks for great reply, I’m going to try this tomarrow and if i still can’t get it to work I’ll send a email your way.

No problem dude, simply shoot me an email if it can’t work.
I would change the DNS last. Make a copy of everything to the new host and get everything setup. Then change the DNS, then….transfer the domain name to hostgator, if need be. The best scenario, is to register your domain with another party separate from your hosting so that you have more control over your domain and your website. NameCheap is a pretty good one and they are always running specials for domain registration.

@Susan,
Thanks for sharing your ideas Susan, in fact I’m testing this way for other of my blog transfer, but not sure whether it works, I’ll let you know if it doesn’t work.
For the domain, I host my domains in Godaddy, that would be good right? As for the specials, Godaddy does have discount if you purchase a few domains one shot, perhaps NameCheap is good too, but still I prefer Godaddy since I’ve used it for few months without any problem.
Hey KaHoongChai,
I am very pleased to have this information, as I am planning to shgift my blog to hostgator, just because the hosting that I am using presently is degrading.
And I have spend three hours with my friend as he has some knowledge about it. but now i can manage it by my own i think.

Robust hosting is very much important for keeping the site growing. I think Hostgator is reliable. You could have planned your site transfer well to avoid the downtime. Putting the site down for 2 days is not good, but now you have your site working perfectly – Congrats
@Home Jobs,
You’re right, putting the site down for 2 days is not a good action, my traffic dropped 95% when the blog was down, but it’s back to normal and the traffic is increasing day by day now, I’m happy to see that. Thanks a lot for reading this blog dude, hope to see you again here, keep in touch!
