10 Blog Commenting Strategies That Drive Traffic

by Lee Ka Hoong on July 30, 2009

Everyone knows that blog commenting is one of the effective way to build backlinks and drive more traffic to your blog, but do you know how to do it correctly so that you could generate quality traffic which will stay longer in your blog and return again to check your latest article, but not those traffic which steps in the first time and say “ByeBye” to you and never see them anymore, this is something that we need to really practicing.

When it comes to make money online, building backlinks by using blog commenting strategies to improve your search engine ranking for certain profitable keywords can be very interesting, but when it comes to branding your name and your blog, you might need to learn some blog commenting strategies to make it successful. Blog commenting becomes popular when it comes to building backlinks, but I don’t see its’ value if you left comment in nofollow blogs, you don’t get any link juice. So, since you’re not getting any advantage by leaving comment in nofollow blog, then you should know how to leave comment wisely to build your brand and drive more first time traffic to your blog and make them become regular readers.

10 Useful Blog Commenting Strategies

1) Use Your Name
I believe that most of the people like to leave comment by using a keyword as their name, such as “Internet Entrepreneur”, “Make Money Online”, and etc, they just want to get more backlinks which contains their keyword, they believe that it helps on search engine ranking, but I do think that it’s no longer useful if you’re commenting in a nofollow blog.

In fact, I used to leave comment by using the keyword “Make Money Online” before this, but I realized that commenting in this way doesn’t really build my brand and people doesn’t know who is this people who named “Make Money Online”. Perhaps people would think that this is a spam comment as well, end up you won’t drive any traffic to your blog. Currently I start to leave comment by using my name “Lee Ka Hoong” instead of “Make Money Online”, I do prefer to build my brand instead of the keyword ranking, do remember that branding yourself is much more important than everything when it comes to online business.

2) Valuable Comment
Leaving a comment is simple, you could just say “Great Post!” and hit submit, but does it really helps in branding yourself and drive traffic to your blog? The answer is definitely “NO”! By leaving a “Great Post!” comment, you’re trying to show people that you don’t have any opinion or idea on this article, you’re not good in this field to give any comment, perhaps people would think you’ve never read the article and you just want to leave a backlink.

You’ll never be appreciated and no one likes to read your blog since you don’t have any valuable comment. So, you need to leave honor and valuable comment in an article that you’re interested, otherwise don’t leave any comment if you have no idea in your mind, finish the article and skip to another blog.

3) Question And Answer
You can actually say a lot of things in a comment, you can ask a question regarding the article, or helping the owner to answer other commenter’s question. I found this method quite interesting and effectiveness when it comes to building brand, the blog owner will really appreciate your help and most probably you’ll get featured in the blog as well. Indirectly, you’re building your brand and you’ll get more exposure when you get featured.

4) Be Active
You need to be active in commenting in a blog, so that people remember you and know your exist. I used to bookmark all the blogs that I comment regularly, I checked them almost daily to see whether there is any new blog post for me to leave comment. Of course, the blog post must be interesting and I’ve some additional points to add or ask a question, otherwise I’ll skip the blog and continue with another.

5) Be First Commenter In Latest Article
As we know, the activity in the latest article is usually highest. So, try to be the first one to leave comment, your comment will be in the first row, when other people are reading the article and would like to leave a comment as well, your comment is eye catching to be in the first row, then they’ll be more likely to visit the URL and see who is it. Remember that this point is attached with #2 Valuable comment, if you can do it with both of the action, then your commenting strategy would be great.

6) Be A Top Commenter
This was one of the link building strategies that I used to get into Top 10 of the keyword “Make Money Online” for this blog. I used to leave comment in blogs which installed Top Commentator Plugin, because it increased the exposure for my blog as all the readers of the blog could saw my name in the Top Commentator section, it also increased the chance people clicked and read my blog.

Same as #4, I used to bookmark all the blogs which installed the Top Commentator plugin, and visited them daily to see whether there was any new blog post for me to leave comment, my mission was to leave valuable comment and be a top commenter. This helps a lot in search engine ranking if the blog is a dofollow blog.

7) Commenting In Active Blog
People are more likely to visit blog which updates regularly as the activity would be higher compare with others, if you’re using these blog commenting strategies while commenting, then the chance that your link to be clicked will be very high. Choosing and commenting in the right blog can really boost your result. Nevertheless, I suggest you not to be too picky, you should actually leave comment in any blog that you like even though it’s a low activity blog, so that you can be well known in the blogopshere.

8 ) Be Negative Side
I do actually realize that most of the commenters tend to agree with what the blog owner writes, but don’t you see any commenter who stands in the negative side? I can say this kind of commenter is less and less this days. While they’re pointing out the points that they don’t agree with you, at the mean time they share their valuable opinion with you, so you could learn something new from the comment and it may benefit your readers as well. I do really appreciate this kind of commenter.

With that said, if you read an article and you have few really strong points to disagree the blog owner, then you should leave a comment and write your points to be an “evil” commenter. Of course, you need to be well in the points that you’re stated, so that you can fight with the people who don’t agree with your statement.

9) Sharing Your Personal Experience
There are many types of comment, it can be question and answer as what I mentioned earlier, it can be negative comment or positive comment as well. We can actually share our personal experiences in the relevant article, I believe that people are more likely to read your personal experiences, people will know more about you and they know the field that you’re expert in. This also improves the relationship between you and the blog owner as both of you know each other well. As you know, relationship between you and other bloggers is very important as they could help you in your online business in future.

10) Commenting In DoFollow Blog
This is the last blog commenting strategies and this is the common one. Everyone knows commenting in dofollow blog can really improves your search engine ranking for certain keyword. In this case, if you get to know that the blog is a dofollow blog, then you can get the advantage and leave a keyword link to your blog in the comment, but you need to do it wisely so that the blog owner won’t be treating you as a spammer.

So, you should try to leave comment by using name which contains your keyword. If they’ve installed the KeywordLuv plugin, then you can try to leave comment in this way “Lee@Make Money Online“; otherwise you can just use the keyword in your name, but you need to initial your name in the signature, so that the blog owner knows that you’re not a spammer. Remember, this is not a good way to build your brand as I said it earlier, so decide yourself whether you want a strong brand or better search engine ranking for the keyword.

Conclusion

There are actually a lot of other blog commenting strategies out there, but these were the commenting strategies that I used and I found them quite useful. In fact, I’m currently quite active in John Chow’s blog as his blog fullfills the requirements that I’ve set such as “active blog”, “top commentator plugin” and etc. I used to be one of the top commenter in his blog and I received a few visitors from his blog everyday, quite interesting.

Nice strategies to drive traffic to a website / blog. I need to do more on driving traffic to my blog. I comment on people’s blog, but I need to find blogs with commentluv, dofollow, and top commentor plugins. I think with this combination you are going to do good. Thanks Greg Ellison

@Greg Ellison,
Thanks for reading this article Greg! Commenting in blog which has commentluv, dofollow and top commentor plugins is really cool to build strong backlinks, but I believe that this is the hardest task in doing link building as not much blog has these features these days, they do want to save their link juice as well.

Hello KaHoongChai,

perhaps you should try to find some of the DoFollow-Blogs in Google. We could type in Commentluv (because it’s usually somewhere on the blog mentioned).

I will give you a link to a blog where you can find a long list with DoFollow-Bloggers.
It’s this one: http://inside-my-head.com/index.php/do-follow-bloggers

Most of them make your comment DoFollow after you have given a bunch of comments to prevent that you just spam their blogs.

I think there is every niche included, so you can find your favorite blogs to comment on -no guarantee that they will make your comment DoFollow-

Hope you can use the list for your purposes :-)

If you want to have some fun, you could hop over to my blog and take part in a free traffic generating contest. Sponsoring from 5$ on, ad space, books, nearly whatever is from value and then i will sent you the persons who want to win this to your blog for a whole week. They have to search the answer for a question on one of your blog posts.
Isn’t that amazing, one week full exposure, link love from all participants (requirement to post all sponsors on their blog).
But read it yourself what one of the sponsors already wrote and how he will benefit from this exciting contest… http://businessphereconsulting.com/cornyman-and-his-biggest-entrecard-contest-be-a-sponsor-and-make-history/

@New Blogger,
That’s the reason that many people couldn’t be able to find high PR dofollow blog with commentluv plugin installed, if you can get it then you might be able to get indexed in short period and you may get PR1-2 in the first few months for a baby blog too.

Well, I’m using a nickname so I hope that’s good lol! Yes I agree with a lot of these factors. The truth is I just CAN’T bring myself to leave crappy ‘great post!’ type comments – I just won’t do it. But there are loads of people that do. If they did it on my blog, I’d tend to think it was spam! I like the idea about the negative comments. Thinking back, I don’t normally disagree in comments. Sometimes if it’s very heated I’d rather stay out of it.

@Web Career Girl,
Thanks for dropping by my blog and leaving a comment! I do agree with you that many people like to leave pointless comment such as “Great post!”, they don’t know the power of blog commenting and this actually helps in building your brand and get more exposure if you have left honor comment in the blog. I found that many people stay out of it when it comes to leave negative comments, including myself. But I’ll still share my opinion if I really can’t accept the point and I have better point to share.

Again, great to see you here WebCareerGirl, hope to see you more in coming days in this blog. :)

Hai Lee..nice tips. For me, I will find a blog that really make me fell in love. I don’t like to use the word ‘comment’ but I love to treat the section comment as a “citcat” spot. Why? That section not only for us to leave a comment but to communicate with each other. To talk with others, to citcat with others. Sound interesting huh? Do you realized how many commentors do come back to respon to others comment after leaving a comment? Although they give a good comment, most of them never care about others comment. My point is..try to make friend and build your network.

One more thing, I just realized that I’m a top commentors in your blog.. =)

I am pretty sure I try and do everything you mentioned in your post. I actually added Linky Love to our site last night, and I have a post coming out later today addressing things we will be doing to increase comments on our site.

Great! I can see your effort in building your personal brand Doug, you’re doing well in this field! Yea, it really pissed me off if I didn’t know who is the author of the blog that I’m reading right now, this is why we should add a “About Author” at the main page so that people knows who is the author.

Linky Love is a dofollow plugin that used to encourage readers to leave comment right? I’m sure you’ll be getting more blog comments in your site, but be aware of the increase of spam comment as well. This was why I don’t use dofollow in my comment section as I hate spam comment and “Great Post” comment. Anyway, I’m going to use Linky Love plugin too, this is one of the way to say thank you to all of the valuable readers! :D

Hey Lee, Great tips that we should all remember to make use of if we want to get our blogs off the ground so to speak. I have always used my JJ with the rest of my blogs name to make it personal and to market the name. I especially like the fact that you mention to at least leave a comment and not just a “nice post” if you don’t have anything to say then stay away. That sounds brutal, but if we all read a post then there’s always something to interact and respond to in regards to that post. I like to be first when I can on a comment, I agree with you that your name sticks out for all to see. Thanks for the great tips!! jj

I’m sure you’ll be well known in some days as you’ve built your brand and you have a lot of followers right now. In fact, JJ is the name of a popular Taiwanese singer, it’s my favorite singer too. lol! :P
Leaving a comment with just a “Great post” or “Nice post!” is just wasting time and it doesn’t help in building personal brand too, they just throwing their names into the dustbin. And yes, if you really read the post, for sure you’ll have something to share or at least talk about what you think about this issue or case, a short paragraph of 2-3 liners will do. Also, it’s kinda difficult to be the first one to comment in an article, unless you bookmark the blog and visit regularly to check whether there is any new post, else you should need to get some software that will notify you when there is new post on the blog in your list.

Again, thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment here, I appreciate it JJ! :D

@marcus,
That’s a plus if you could get a list of do-follow blogs and start commenting on their blogs, but I won’t ignore no-follow blogs because I’m concern about building brand and I want to get well known in the blogosphere, so you’re not recommended to avoid commenting on no-follow blogs at all. If you say so, I assume you don’t leave comment in John Chow blog, Problogger blog and other established blogs? Also, this blog is a nofollow blog too. ;)

Also, it’s really difficult to get dofollow blogs nowadays as most of them prevent their link juices from leaking out.

Yea, if you can find blog with dofollow then it’s the best thing ever, then you can try to leave a keyword that you optimized in the comment, but you need to write honor comment, otherwise you’ll be treated as spam. ;)

Using your own name to comment basically just brings branding to your name and it is only important if you wish to brand yourself.

I find your blog interesting. But tell me how is that you expect negative comments to get through moderation. Its challenging. Do reply back on that.

hey there !
Just read your article on building backlines, just wondering why do you comment on other’s blog? Such as John Chow for example? dont you think that this would bring your traffic redirect to him? What’s the point you made that ? Or do you think yourself as better commentor as you being able to make comment on john chow or so on? Dont take it wrong, just trying to understand the concept over here!

On top of that, also notice that , in the article you have repeat yourself in number of similar point such as top commentor,comment always and so on,why do you do that ? Is it becouse you would like your article lenght to be more than 250 words? So taht you have higher traffic ?

And also, I have problem in downloading your e-book, i received the feedburner confirmation but couldnt notice any ebook in myemail, I also notice other’s face the similar problem, can you check it out, & if posible sent me a copy? Would like to check it out!

Awaiting for your reply.

Thanks & Have Good Day

@hema chan,
First of all, commenting on others’ blog would build your brand in the blogosphere, just want to let people knows that you exist. I leave comment in John Chow’s blog and get into his Top Commentator, this increases my blog traffic as his blog has tons of unique visitor a day, and his visitors will click on the link in the Top Commentator. I received a lot of traffic daily when I used to be in the Top Commentator list.

I think the feedburner doesn’t have any problem, you need to verify your subscription after receiving the feedburner confirmation, after confirming the subscription and I’ll be sending you the Ebook shortly. Anyway, I’ve sent out the Ebook to all the subscribers just now. Check your copy and enjoy it. :)

@ceejay,
Thanks for reading my blog ceejay! Are you mentioning about this post http://myblog2day.com/get-highest-cpc-rate-for-adsense-click-by-blocking-mfa-sites.php ?
We can block about 200 blacklist sites in our Adsense’s Competitive Ad Filter only, there are tons of sites which pay low CPC rate, which mean the chance of getting low pay rate is still there. Don’t too worry about this, as long as you target the right profitable keyword, then you will get about $0.50 or even higher. :)

This is an interesting article. I have very little experience in commenting on blogs. I was under the impression that this kind of thing is frowned upon and looked at as spam. However, this could be a good tool to drive traffic and we all know traffic=money. How much success have you had in blog commenting to drive traffic?

I think a lot of the time, bloggers see commenting as a numbers game! I prefer to be selective on where I comment and try to build relationships with the blog owners. If you focus on a couple of blogs and regularly comment there, you will have much more success they just commenting everywhere!

Hi,

Lee..this article is great..as for me Q & A is a good thing to make a discussion in comment box.

KaHoongChai (1324 comments.)

anyway, im using Thesis too, im curious on how did you put how many comments that the commentator made in your blog.

Any plug-in you use to make it happened or a simple customization perhaps.

This make visitor commenting a lot in order to get more digits!

Thank you…nice blog..
