Yes, I too agree with you that using too many plug-ins would slow the page load time so minimizing plugins would be good or you may use all-in-one SEO pack for using multiple plugins in one plugins which would work for almost all the SEO work to optimize our blogs..

I also don’t use too many plug-ins, I use just 5 or 6 necessary plugins, thats it.

Google webmaster tools says my blog loads in 4.4 seconds and that is slower than 70% of all sites in their index.

I assume this can cause a problem with rankings, so now implementing your suggestions.
