3 Effective Ways to Monetize Website Traffic

This is a guest post by Raymond Selda. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

There are tons of already proven and effective ways on how you could make money online. All you have to do is choose one method, learn it and put everything into action. There’s no special secret that the gurus have been keeping because it all boils down to pure hard work and also from having the right mindset.

With that being said, there’s still one crucial ingredient you need if you really want to build a profitable online business and that is traffic. There are also many ways on how you get customers to your offers but in this article we’re going to discuss how you can monetize your traffic.

1) Advertising
This was the first avenue that I took to monetize my blog. Google has a program called Adsense where you can get some codes to put advertisements in your website. I’m really not a fan of advertising using Google Adsense but many marketers build up sites that are solely dedicated to earning some income through this kind of advertising.

The key to getting a good income with Google Adsense is the niche that you’re going to choose. Make sure that your niche pays enough for clicks (somewhere above $1) so you can effectively monetize it even if you don’t get that much traffic. Website layout also plays an important role so make sure that your site design is going to complement your ads.

2) Affiliate Marketing
This is my favorite method and this is where I put all of my efforts. Basically you just choose someone else’s product to promote and you earn commissions for every sale that you generate. It’s really that simple but it is not really that easy so don’t be fooled by gurus promising you the moon.

One thing that I love about affiliate marketing is the fact that you don’t need a whole lot of money in order to begin. Actually you can start promoting products without shelling a single penny. But if you really want to build a solid affiliate marketing business then I would highly suggest that you invest and build your own websites instead of relying on free websites like Squidoo. Quality web hosting only costs $10 per month and also a one-time fee of $10 for a domain name which is basically all you really need to get going.

3) List Building and Email Marketing
Basically all you need to do with this kind of business model is collect email addresses but make sure that you provide a good incentive for them to leave their information. At first glance you would be lazy to do this because this really takes a lot of work. But if you’re not doing this then you’re really leaving lots of money on the table.

You know that most of the time a visitor isn’t going to buy the first time they see your product. By collecting their information you now have the chance to build their trust by providing solid information. Don’t make the mistake of just spamming your list with email promotions. Provide value and hopefully you’ve earned their trust enough to be taking action on your recommendations.

These are some of the most basic and effective ways to earn a decent income online. You’ll also find that these methods also work in the offline business. Which method should you go for? It’s really up to you. You can apply only one method or combine them all to really ramp up your profits.

    • Thanks for chiming in Jayce. I’m still not that comfortable yet with list building and email marketing. Affiliate marketing really does take a lot of hard work. I’ve made a goal of earning $27 per month back in January but still I’m still nowhere that amount. hehehe. Would you mind sharing what monetization works best for you? I’m guessing you’re having results with advertising.

Unfortunately affiliate marketing does not work as well for certain niches. A big part of the effectiveness depends on the implementation. Some people put 1 or 2 somewhat relevant affiliate banners on their site and expect results. There’s more to it than that.

I start off with list building and it just plain drop dead :o

I got a feeling social network like facebook and twitter could be the replacement for list building using auto responder. Its free and allow far more interaction with the people in your lists – its just need some innovating ideas.

    • Yeah, I have found it much easier to build a huge following on Facebook or Twitter than an Email list. I think it is because of the stigma Email gets for attracting so much spam.

I’m still trying to build that email list though, it’s just slower going.

  5. Christina says:

I don’t have any luck in affiliate marketing but I do know it’s really an effective way to monetize your website, I just have to find the right affiliate program.

    • I also didn’t have any luck with affiliate marketing when I started. I even quit! Thank goodness I tried it again. There are tons of affiliate programs but I would suggest you start with ClickBank and use articles to promote your website.

I definitely agree. Diversification is a good idea. You don’t want to be overly reliant on any one source of income. Then what happens if that one income source dries up or has other complications? Ideally you will have several sources of income so that you always have something to fall back upon.

  10. kostas from opportunities says:

Nice article but I think if someone really wants to make an online business and not just make a few dollars per month he should build a website in niche that he really like and knows about because if he doesn like what he is doing he will give up easily in the begining and if he doesnt know a lot of things about the subject of his website he will get nowhere…

    • Very good tip Kostas! Some people will maintain only one site that makes $100 a day and some will maintain 100 sites that makes $1 a day. Everyone is different and you have to find out what works for you and where you are most comfortable with. This is the beauty of Internet marketing.
