7 Great Ways To Supplement Adsense

As one of the highest paying advertising programs on the internet which you can make money online from your blog, Adsense is fantastic. But what about those picky visitors that refuse to click on Adsense ads. You know who they are, the ones that are just too savvy to be lured into clicking on a well written Adsense advertisement. It’s not their fault. Different people respond to different types of advertisements, and Adsense won’t satisfy them all. Therefore you should employ several different means to monetize your website or blog.

Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are almost a necessity when it comes to monetizing your website. There is a misconception that affiliate programs will make your site look garish because you are forced to plaster banners all over your site. Well, the good news is that it’s not the 90s anymore and there are other options. Instead of those ugly banners, just put your affiliate link within your text. They don’t look like advertisements and the average reader will not think twice about clicking on them. This way you can use affiliate programs without those ugly banner ads.

Search Related Ads

Adsense focuses primarily on content related advertisements. This opens the door for you to throw in some search related ads if the style of your website warrants it. These ads will target whatever your visitors last typed into a search engine. While the ads may not be related to your site, you can reap the benefits by having ads targeted specifically to that visitor’s tastes. One program that offers this service is Chitika.

Text Ads

You won’t make a ton of money with text ads, and they should never be used as a primary source of income. They can, however, be used as a secondary source. Online programs like Infolinks and Kontera will put text ads on your website. These ads will highlight a keyword at random and provide an advertisement to a corresponding advertisement whenever someone hovers over the link. The problem with this is that the ads may or may not be relevant to what your visitors are looking for. You won’t earn a ton of money this way, but every little bit counts.

Sell Advertising Space

If you have a decent amount of monthly traffic, you may be able to sell some advertising space on your website. The easiest way to do this is to charge a flat fee. Your customer will buy some ad space for a specific price per month, and will pay you regardless of the results. You can also charge by views or clicks. Some advertisers will only want to pay if your site delivers, and this can be a good option for them. Once your website becomes popular enough, selling advertising space can significantly increase your monthly income.

Lee (Blog Owner) : If you don’t want to keep yourself busy by monitoring these works, one of the best marketplaces will be BuySellAds, you just have to place the script at a strategic location on your blog and forget about it. BuySellAds will do all the works for you, but do remember to cashout your earning.

Referral Programs

Referral programs are similar to affiliate programs in the sense that they are delivered to your customers in the same way. You can put them up as a banner or a text link. The difference from affiliate advertising is that you will only earn residuals based on a percentage of what your referral earns. When you set up a referral program on your site, you should try to teach your visitors how to earn money from that site. This way you can increase your referral revenue. If they are successful, they will become repeat customers to your site because you helped them.

Paid Polls

You can actually get paid to host polls on your website. Advertisers are willing to pay for a service like this to get demographic information. Think about it as a quick survey on your site. This can actually enhance the attractiveness of your site. People love to participate in polls.

Donations

Sometimes if you ask, people will give. If your site is really helpful, people may feel obligated to repay you for your help. You can add an unobtrusive donation widget to your site, just in case someone feels inclined to offer you money. Don’t expect a lot though.

There are more ways to monetize your website, but you really don’t want to overdo it. If you have too many advertisements littering your website it can drive visitors away, or worse, anger Google. It is important to focus on maintaining the integrity of your site as you advertise. You should also pay close attention to the Adsense terms of service. You don’t want to get your account suspended for trying something new. If you can do this, your visitors will grow and your site will steadily increase its profitability.

  1. Lee, Great guest post and full of useful information. I found one or two different ways that I hadn’t really thought of before and may even think about putting them into action. I do however have to comment on Adsense, I’ve noticed that there are quite a few people usually new to blogging coming from BlogCatalog that will email saying they have been to your blog and that they liked it and clicked on some ads, then “hoping you will visit my blog and do same for me”. I was appalled when I first got one of these emails, and quickly emailed back and told them that it was against Google’s rules or LAW to do that so please do not click on my ads anymore. I feel bad for the ones that do email me these notices because I think some of them are coming from a very poor place and are hoping that this will bring riches to their lives. We all know one can’t get rich on Adsense that’s for sure, so these other ways are great supplements. Thanks, jj

      To JJ,
I also have come across these type of people. First, I do get along to know the mechanism (Its alright to learn from mistakes). Well, i don’t know which country you’re referring to but I really can guess. For me, true, it against Google Rules.
However, for their community it is like “giving each other”…They do not get rich by this type of tricks but its the one who make their bonds stronger. I’m not saying its good (because it encourage fraud and illegal), but some people need explanations and guide to help them leave wrong doings. We as well can say “You’re crossing the rules” but if don’t help them showing the right ways, they will ignore us and still do it.
Too many people showing that you can make Money by AdSense, and tips are given only if you buy their e-book or video/audio guides.
P/s: it happens anywhere , including developed countries. Why not we help them by giving clear info’s?

    • I have found that many people simply don’t know that they are violating Google’s TOS. I guess it would be our jobs as good Samaritans to let them know that what they are doing is wrong, and the right way to go about getting clicks.

Hi Lee. Lawrence has managed to point up some important sources on how to make money online. Well, a lot of people write about it but sometime they over emphasize on certain sources. The way he pointed out the sources is simple and can be absorbed quickly. It is a critical job to make our sentences clear and simple when explaining to newbies (for pro- they won’t even bother to read it). I am also learning to do the same, well, experience is the teacher of all teachers!

This is really a nice list buddy and it will help many people who want to earn through these medium. I feel Adsense is the best and it will remain best in future too.

  4. Well, I have adsense on for a while and have just enabled BuySellAds again. I also have private ad slots, but sales is not grand or what I thought it would be.

I think it will do better as my blog gains popularity and many visits and comments, only time will tell. Owners of blogs/sites need to make many means possible for the user to advertise on their site.

thanks for the nice article. I don’t know how long we can make many with adsense but it’s definitely the best and easiest way to pay your hosting bill…

    • Am I missing something? Is Adsense going somewhere? Or are you just speaking to the inevitability of things?

      • Jeremy from Laptop Briefcases says:

No I don’t think AdSense is going anywhere, but some people cannot run adsense for one reason or another. For some it may be that adsense is just not very profitable for their niche, especially compared to what can be made with other strategies. It is important to have balanced sources of income. That way if there ever becomes a problem with any of them you have other sources to fall back upon and expand.
