In the rapid paced world of internet, where websites and blogs are added on a regular basis, link building is the only way to survive. Link building is crucial because all the search engines include them in their ranking algorithms. If your website does not have a link, then how come it will feature in top positions in Search Engine Results Page (SERP).

No matter it’s a one-way-link or reciprocal link. It is necessary for your website to include back links of reputed websites helping it to score in terms of coveted audience. You also have to be choosy about the websites niche which you are requesting links. The search engine rankings are also calculated on the basis of how important and relevance a link is. And search engines use complicated rules to calculate this importance. You can also start the link building mission by becoming a member of as many directories and linking communities as you can. You have to take some times to do this but it is worth the effort. Some of the well-known directories are Business.com, LookSmart, Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ.

A site/blog owner might be eager to increase the number of links as much as he can. But it cannot serve a purpose if he is relying on link farms to do that. Link farms are kind of spam sites that exist for the purpose of harboring the links of other websites only. Google has banned sites that are using link farms to create back links for themselves.

Great post Jacob! I hate people who try way too hard to increase search engine rankings such as link farming. They are also the same people who go to forums to ask why they can’t find their sites in the search engine. I am a strong believer of White Hat practices and patience to rank better naturally.
