Do you know what is Time Killer? Time killer is the thing that distracts your concentration and kills your time, in the end you can’t finish your main task. There is a lot of time killers in our life, when I work in my office, the time killer will be reading forward emails, listening phone calls from client, chit chatting with colleagues, answering boss’ questions, and etc, these things always distracted my concentration on the actual tasks and I always need to work overtime to complete the tasks.

When it comes to blogging, there are many blogging time killers too. I used to have about 3-4 hours online everyday, I spent this 3-4 hours to manage my blogs and did some other things, I personally call these some other things as Blogging Time Killer. So you know I have 3-4 hours online everyday, but I spent most of the time on doing other things instead of writing a blog post for my blog, so you see I have only written a blog post once 3-4 days or longer, it was because when I drafted an article, I kept distracted by many other things, end up I couldn’t finish writing the article.
Here is a list of my Blogging Time Killers :
1) Reading And Replying Email
I used to receive about 50 emails everyday, so I need to spend some times to read and reply them. Some email requires for help or question, so I spent a lot of time on replying email. Of course, I did email people to ask for help as well, such as wordpress errors, thesis theme customization, and etc. Sometimes I needed to deal with advertisers as well. I could spent more than 1 hour on the email part.
2) Bloghopping And Leaving Comment
I love reading others’ blog, I have more than 10 blogs bookmarked in my browser and I checked them everyday to check whether is there any updates on the blogs. Usually I will leave a comment after reading the article, if the comment requires the blog owner’s response and the blog owner replied my comment in minutes, I’ll visit the blog again and check for reply. It took me about 1 hour or longer on bloghopping, it was the longest part.
3) Checking Flippa For Latest Auction Listing
Recently I plan to buy a landing page which sells clickbank or any other product, the site must be launched for months and already have earning every month. So I need to visit Flippa.com everyday to check out the latest auction listings, so that I can grab the best offer and get a best deal. I have yet to get one, so I’ll need visit everyday, checking out the auction listing, visiting the auction’s website, and discussing with the owner as well. It took me about half an hour every day.
4) Chit Chatting With Friends Or Clients In MSN
I do have friends or clients looking for me everyday in MSN, clients were looking for help and friends were looking for someone to chat. So I need to entertain my friends as well as my clients. Usually I spent more times to help my clients fixing some problems, sometimes I’ll ignore my friends, I was forced to do it, lol. It took me about half an hour if there was nothing important such as resolving clients’ problems.
5) Replying Blog Comments
I used to have about 5-10 comments in this blog, sometimes more if I published a new article. So I need to spend some times replying the comment. I used to reply every single comments in the past, but I found that some of the commenter left “lazy” and pointless comment, such as “I love your post, it’s very informative!”, I approved the comment (if that’s human) but I’ll ignore the comment and skip to next comment. Usually it took me about half an hour too.
So you can see I almost finish spending my 3-4 hours online time, sometimes I spent longer time on these. I called them as Blogging Time Killer because they were really time consuming, that was why I was not able to write an article in daily basis. I’ll be setting a time frame to do these thing everyday and take the rest of the times to draft a blog post. When it comes to make money online, I need to be very active so that I can compete with the competition out there.
So, what is your blogging time killer and how much time you spend on them?
I’m usually spend the whole day in front of my laptop or whenever I have chance to be online…I do also all that you said above..

Checking the mail, of course would be priority then doing some reseach on internet marketing….bla..bla.. all this consume time, especially when the internet connestion is damn slow! Btw, I try to add in your name with my YM but it seems to have some error with it ( maybe my broadband connection limits it, anyway I’ll try again). I enjoy reading your blog. @Jayce,
Haha, I never ate anything while blogging. But I think looking for food and drink when blog won’t be affecting your blogging time, you still can think what to write for your blog, the only thing is that you can’t type. lol! :D
I guess, understanding what are the time killers & gaining control over them to make most of your productive time is really essential. However, I believe we can’t stop most of the activities as they do benefit the blog. But certainly, keeping them under control would help to improve productivity.
.-= Chris Peterson´s last blog ..Tips for Building High Value Links for Your Site =-.
@Chris,
We should have better time management to overcome this, set a daily schedule so that the tasks can be done on time, this improves the productivity as well. This is most of the people couldn’t do, including myself. ;)
According to me, though some of the tasks are time killers, it’s hard to escape. However, mostly my time management skills have been at their best, when I hardly had enough of it. It’s the most productive time I usually had. So I think, setting deadlines & rewards system can be of best use to us.

@Chris,
I agree with you Chris. Btw, what kind of rewards system that you used to push yourself to complete the tasks on time? I’m interested to know and learn from you too. ;)
Pre -planning number of tasks planned for he duration you have & maintain the list of plan v/s actual tasks finished. You would, over a period of time, understand how much time you consume in emails, commenting & replying to blog comments etc. Then you can set kinda deadlines that would encourage you to perform better & save time. I hope these tips help you. It might take time for you to see results but keep fighting, dude! You will gain control over time.

@Chris,
Great planning you have in blogging business Chris, this is a good practice and I will definitely take it as my plan too. Most of the people are not able to save their times on blogging because they didn’t know how long they should spent on a single task, when they took too long time on a single tasks and ended up they couldn’t complete another tasks, especially people who have limited time online a day like me. ;)
My main time killers are blog hoping dropping entrecards and reading my email.
@marcus,
Yea, blog hoping is the most time consuming task. There are tons of blogs out there and we can’t stop reading them and leaving comment, it took me about an hour even I have only 10 blogs in my bookmark. :)
Being connected to the Internet is the KILLER for me. I get SO MUCH MORE WORK DONE when I grab my laptop and get out of the house and don’t connect my wireless card. Everything you listed takes up my time, as well as checking CNN, ESPN, Local News, etc….
The Internet is the greatest and worse thing to ever come in my life :)
Definitely spend way too much time online!

@Doug,
Yea, sometimes we can complete more tasks if we do it offline, but sometimes we need to online and do research too, it depends on what kind of tasks you have right now. But time killers will be always with you, it’s too difficult to piss them off. ;)
it look like we have the same ” killer time ” lol… i have more than 100 email everday.. 20% of them is spam….i create one post everyday.. and sure it takes lot of my time
.-= EarningStep´s last blog ..Leave your comments on my blog and get what you need =-.
@EarningStep,
Seems that you manage to write one post a day even though time killer kills your time. I couldn’t get it done because I’ve limited time online a day. Anyway, I appreciate your works. :D
I usually do my blogging activities more or less 10 hours a day. That just because I am a full time blogger but because of my current job as an internet cafe attendant.
I don’t have my own personal computer so more of my blogging updates will be performed at internet cafes.
I love also spending my time on visiting others’ blog if their are some new updates. I also have more than 20 bookmark sites in my browser which I visit everyday. I also include yours. hehehe. I love eating new information because I am always hungry on learning new things.
Thank you for sharing your experiences. I hope we could be friends.

@EMAH,
I think it’s great to be a full time blogger, this is what I can’t do right now. Oh I see, so you take the advantage of free online for 24hours as long as you work there, you should be able to complete a lot of tasks online.
Thanks for putting my site in your favourite list! I appreciate it! Of course we can be friends, blogging is all about building community. :D
