What Is Blogging Time Killer?

September 8, 2009 · 55 comments

Do you know what is Time Killer? Time killer is the thing that distracts your concentration and kills your time, in the end you can’t finish your main task. There is a lot of time killers in our life, when I work in my office, the time killer will be reading forward emails, listening phone calls from client, chit chatting with colleagues, answering boss’ questions, and etc, these things always distracted my concentration on the actual tasks and I always need to work overtime to complete the tasks.

When it comes to blogging, there are many blogging time killers too. I used to have about 3-4 hours online everyday, I spent this 3-4 hours to manage my blogs and did some other things, I personally call these some other things as Blogging Time Killer. So you know I have 3-4 hours online everyday, but I spent most of the time on doing other things instead of writing a blog post for my blog, so you see I have only written a blog post once 3-4 days or longer, it was because when I drafted an article, I kept distracted by many other things, end up I couldn’t finish writing the article.

Here is a list of my Blogging Time Killers :

1) Reading And Replying Email
I used to receive about 50 emails everyday, so I need to spend some times to read and reply them. Some email requires for help or question, so I spent a lot of time on replying email. Of course, I did email people to ask for help as well, such as wordpress errors, thesis theme customization, and etc. Sometimes I needed to deal with advertisers as well. I could spent more than 1 hour on the email part.

2) Bloghopping And Leaving Comment
I love reading others’ blog, I have more than 10 blogs bookmarked in my browser and I checked them everyday to check whether is there any updates on the blogs. Usually I will leave a comment after reading the article, if the comment requires the blog owner’s response and the blog owner replied my comment in minutes, I’ll visit the blog again and check for reply. It took me about 1 hour or longer on bloghopping, it was the longest part.

3) Checking Flippa For Latest Auction Listing
Recently I plan to buy a landing page which sells clickbank or any other product, the site must be launched for months and already have earning every month. So I need to visit Flippa.com everyday to check out the latest auction listings, so that I can grab the best offer and get a best deal. I have yet to get one, so I’ll need visit everyday, checking out the auction listing, visiting the auction’s website, and discussing with the owner as well. It took me about half an hour every day.

4) Chit Chatting With Friends Or Clients In MSN
I do have friends or clients looking for me everyday in MSN, clients were looking for help and friends were looking for someone to chat. So I need to entertain my friends as well as my clients. Usually I spent more times to help my clients fixing some problems, sometimes I’ll ignore my friends, I was forced to do it, lol. It took me about half an hour if there was nothing important such as resolving clients’ problems.

5) Replying Blog Comments
I used to have about 5-10 comments in this blog, sometimes more if I published a new article. So I need to spend some times replying the comment. I used to reply every single comments in the past, but I found that some of the commenter left “lazy” and pointless comment, such as “I love your post, it’s very informative!”, I approved the comment (if that’s human) but I’ll ignore the comment and skip to next comment. Usually it took me about half an hour too.

So you can see I almost finish spending my 3-4 hours online time, sometimes I spent longer time on these. I called them as Blogging Time Killer because they were really time consuming, that was why I was not able to write an article in daily basis. I’ll be setting a time frame to do these thing everyday and take the rest of the times to draft a blog post. When it comes to make money online, I need to be very active so that I can compete with the competition out there.

So, what is your blogging time killer and how much time you spend on them?

According to me, though some of the tasks are time killers, it’s hard to escape. However, mostly my time management skills have been at their best, when I hardly had enough of it. It’s the most productive time I usually had. So I think, setting deadlines & rewards system can be of best use to us.

Pre -planning number of tasks planned for he duration you have & maintain the list of plan v/s actual tasks finished. You would, over a period of time, understand how much time you consume in emails, commenting & replying to blog comments etc. Then you can set kinda deadlines that would encourage you to perform better & save time. I hope these tips help you. It might take time for you to see results but keep fighting, dude! You will gain control over time.

Hi there lee,
Well, just read you article as above and couldnt agree less or more on that with you. As you meantion above, all of your activities apart from blogging is a time killer in another word would be wasting your time. I wouldnt agree that with you as I found that to be more beneficial than anything else.
Why am I saying this ?
Well, let’s take it as imagination, input>process>output
Well, when you do all of the activities which you listed out there such as reading email, chatting, hunting your techinical problems solution, asking for help and so on, this were actually building up your input which is your knowledge towards a problem and issue,so when you found the solution it actually gives you a better foundation for you to produce your output which is your blog and post which would be quality article and would increase the traffic and revenue to your site.

So, as for me,wha you have done in the list above,is a great work, keep on doing it and build your strong foundation as well help others to build them and share good community together.

Have great day :)

I batch process any commenting or responding to comments to two 30-minute sessions twice a week. If I get tempted to write a long-winded comment, I ask myself how I can turn my thoughts into a blog post. If you’re going to get distracted, you might as well design systems to funnel those distractions back into something productive.

While you consider replying to the blog comments as time wasters I do not think that way.If you reply on a comment the commenter might get the feel that you are in connect with him and would be more participative on your blogs.Don’t we want this? Yes others might be time wasters but if it is related to your blog it is fine. The fun ends where you know it is not at all connected to your blog and you still have to work on that.Good for you to point out, many people waste their time without even knowing they are at it.

KaHoongChai September 22, 2009 at 10:48 pm

@Garry,
Blog commenting in relevant blogs might help in brand building and traffic building, but when it comes to spending more times and producing more quality content, blog commenting is one of the biggest time killer. I didn’t say that blog commenting is not good, but it may take most of your times when you’re going to write a post, especially for those who has minimum time online in a day (just like me), they need to take time to concentrate in writing more posts. :)
