Many bloggers aim to get some quick traffic when they start a new blog. You can get initial traffic by participating in social communities (like Twitter, Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon, MySpace etc), commenting on other blogs in your niche, getting involved in forums or even paid traffic (Adwords, advertising on other blogs, advertising on Facebook or StumbleUpon). But if you take a long term view, organic traffic (traffic from search engines) is most important traffic for your blog.
Organic traffic is best
The social media traffic is generally less responsive and less likely to stick around. Search engine traffic is highly sought after because these people are actively looking for something that you are offering.
Building organic traffic takes time
New blogs take several months before they gain trust from search engines. If you are looking forward to focus on organic traffic here are some tips that will help you in long haul.
- Write well researched and great content that people will like to read and share. Quality content is only way to go and crap content does not work even if you are using most effective ways of promotion.
- Write ‘evergreen’ content – This is content that is still relevant in a year or more.
- Write consistent content – Repeat visitors and search engines both like the consistent content and keep coming back. Set a posting frequency for your blog and stick to it.
- Link building helps a lot – You should take some time out to build some links back to your blog. Consider building links using different strategies including commenting on other do-follow blogs, article submissions, using forum signatures for this purpose, guest posting on other related blogs, directory submissions etc are to name a few.
Networking is critical
Networking plays a role in bringing search engine love to your blog. A strong network provides you friends that can help you in many ways. They can provide you links to your blog or can give you social media votes. Let your friends know about pillar articles that you write and other quality stuff, they may decide to link to those posts which is beneficial in terms of building quality and related links to your blog.
Comment on high ranked related posts
This is another way to get some indirect search engine traffic. Suppose you have written a post about “logo design” for instance. Search this term on Google and go to the sites that are on number 1- 5 positions for this keyword and see if you can comment on these posts. Make sure your comments are related and interesting. These sites are getting good traffic for specific keyword and will forward some targeting traffic to your blog.
Yes it takes time
Do not quit. Keep writing great content and you will see the results. Quality and consistent content never lets you loose. You will notice after a few months that organic traffic is best and it will keep coming to the articles that you wrote months ago. Never think your strategy is not working and keep on writing good stuff. It takes time but you will love search engine traffic and its results.

i love this tip – “Comment on high ranked related posts”. One of the simplest tip but really efficient !
Yes, commenting is one of the effective method to improve not only your traffic but the community. However, I still prefer organic traffic.
Networking is definitely the best way to get new and recurring blog traffic.
We tend to focus on getting new traffic but forget about retaining and changing the new visitors into recurring and loyal blog followers.
By having good networking through social site such as twitter, it will help us in getting both blog traffic – new and recurring.
There will definitely come a stage when we do not have to market our site but our loyal followers are the one who will do it for us.
Best example – JohnChow and Shoemoney especially through their twitter contest.
Definitely! Blogger like them doesn’t have to really involve in social site in their current stage, whatever they do, their readers will do or promote for them. But I believe that they did very well and put lots of effort in the begin stage. Appreciate of what they have achieved!
Very good post indeed. Good job Sohail

Organic traffic is something that I’m currently working hard for. But don’t rush for it, keep on blogging and that will follow.
Thanks all for liking the post. I think we should consider to get more quality traffic through search engines beside some quick traffic from social media (digg, SU etc)
Yes Sohail, only organic traffic can makes us money. Other than this, digg and SU can only help you to show your blog or post to the public to let them know that your blog is actually exist.
Building traffic really takes time. Lot of works need to be done.
Jayces last blog post..Who want to play Sudoku game?
Absolutely! The first factor might be quality content to attract reader, 2nd factor might be backlinks to improve search engine ranking and getting organic traffic indirectly. All of them take times, but when you achieve it, all the time you spent is worth it!
Good post Sohail. I also believe in networking. Blog commenting within your community is a great way to build good relationships with other bloggers and make a name for yourself. Branding is very important for your long term success.
