Doubling Your Traffic By Distributing Content into Different Mediums

by Lee Ka Hoong on January 26, 2010

This is a guest post by Melvin. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Almost all bloggers want to make money from their blog. Unfortunately, more than 80% couldn’t and the problem is always the same. And that problem is getting traffic to their own blogs. Even since blogging for money started a long time, this is still the same problem that most of us face. And in this post, I do hope to help you guys in terms of gaining more traffic to your blog.

traffic-jam

The usual misconception of blogging goes like this. The blogger is going to make a post, proofread a bit then hit the publish method. Then he would sit down and wait for traffic. Obviously that is the wrong method. One should always go out and do lots of marketing and promoting after the post has been published. So for today I am going to share the technique which I call as content distribution method. Without further ado, here they are:

  1. Distribute them into a podcast – These days podcasts have been really popular and a lot of bloggers have seem to really turn into it by making it a part of their content. What I usually do is sign up with a free service called as Odiogo. What Odiogo does is automatically create a podcast/mp3 from each and every article of your blog. You can then let people download it or better yet submit them to podcast directories.
  2. Distribute them as videos – Like podcasts, videos are also now part of the content for most bloggers. Unfortunately, there’s no software that can automatically convert an article to a video. What you can do is just take some time on doing a video about the article. Then upload it to as much video sharing sites as you can. Luckily for us TubeMogul does that thing for us. And the best thing? It’s free!
  3. Distribute them in PDF formatPost2PDF is a little plugin that helps you convert your article into pdf format in a breeze. People love free eBooks and by having a PDF format of your article, you’re letting people spread the word for you. It doesn’t end there, like in podcasts you can also submit your eBooks to some eBook directories.
  4. Distribute them in Social Networks – Many people do so much work trying to get traffic from bookmarking sites that they forgot there are a lot of social network sites that they can benefit from. One of the best example is Facebook and it can be done by utilizing the Facebook Fan Page of your blog (w/c is a must-have!). Of course Facebook is not the only social network out there.
  5. Distribute them in Twitter – Ok this one is no way a new idea and almost all people use it already. Twitter is probably the fastest growing website in the past 2 years and I can see striving more this year. I love to use a plugin called Tweetmeme. Tweetmeme lets your readers retweet the article for you with just one simple click.

With those techniques I mentioned above, I can almost guarantee that you can double your traffic. I used these techniques with some variations and they always have good returns of traffic for me. Of course I would love to hear out your opinions about it. If you have questions don’t hesitate to use the contact form.

I use Twitter and FB, I don’t have fan page, but I simply talk about my blog wherever I can.

And I have a lot of friends, so in one hit I can get nice traffic from that too. I found social bookmarking sites difficult to turn into significant traffic generating methods.

Yea Firdaus, you can check the rate at the Advertise page and simply contact me via the contact form.
You can also place banner in any language, but English ads would convert better.

About the content to PDF conversion, will Google actually penalize it because of duplicate content?

Reply

Melvin (20 comments.) January 26, 2010 at 9:54 pm

Definitely not. Google views PDF files differently from the usual content. And besides you’re not gonna upload it into your server but instead have it stored in article directories.

Nice post. :)
While it is a great idea to redistributing content to different mediums.. one must be careful to monitor it’s effectiveness in all those mediums.

Here’s my 2 cents on different mediums and traffic.

it’s very simple.. really.
just google any keywords (example: Make Money)

Now, take a GOOD look at the search results.

How many different mediums they have?
1. Blogs
2. Videos (Youtube etc)
3. Google News
4. Images
5. Some.. even Maps

If you use ALL those mediums that Google LOVES.. yeah, you will have a better chance to get those traffic into your websites.

Off course, you can outsource most of these jobs nowadays.
or just get a system to fully automate all this. Easy money. :)

Cheers,
-D

Good guest post. It is true that too many bloggers simply sit back and wait for traffic once they publish a new post. These strategies are good examples of ways you can generate some additional exposure for your post. It’s also a good idea to comment on blogs that have the comment luv plugin that links to your last blogpost.

I wouldn’t say that’s the most important place to submit articles anymore. In the past that strategy was effective, but now most of the article directories have been so diluted with countless outbound links, some of which are spammy. So it is now more beneficial to get your articles published on more trusted sites.

I think most of the people who are blogging for the sole purpose of making money have MMO blogs. Traffic coming from social networking (Twitter, other MMO bloggers, etc.) will not buy your affiliate products or click on Ads. They are all too familiar with affiliate marketing and will sign up to something under their own affiliate link if they really want to get the product. They are also too familiar with ads.

These are good suggestions with some caveats. First, social media often brings immediate traffic but not long term traffic. Social media is great for inbound links. For making money though, social media is not good. Social media users are computer savvy and typically avoid clicking ads and buying products. The bottom line for long term, money making traffic is that you need to write about what people are searching for and have people like it and link to it.

Hey Lee,

People just starting out online REALLY underestimate the power of social media and i’m glad you mentioned point 4 on Social Network distribution.

I think seo and the whole serp mumbo jumbo will play an important role in the future, but with google going on their rampage google slapping webmasters left, right and center there is only going to be one constant that will remain. People.

Being listed on the first pages of google may be an important ingredient but in my opinion building relationships with people will stand the test of time and not even google can control that. I say, “viva la revolution” ;-D

Excellent article bro. Keep up the great work !!!!
