I’d upgrade my food blog to WordPress 2.7 last year December, but I didn’t upgrade this make money online blog to the latest WordPress version. The reason I didn’t upgrade this blog to the latest WordPress version is I was lazy, but I found that most of the wordpress plugin couldn’t be able to be function with my old wordpress version, it was WordPress 2.5. Besides these, I realized some coding problem with my WordPress themes and I’ve yet to resolve it, still in curing process. So I decided to backup all my wordpress files, upgrade to the latest wordpress version, and try to resolve the coding problem. As you know, coding problem might affect the SEO or search engine ranking for your blog, I’m trying to resolve it asap. Search engine ranking is the key, especially when it comes to make money online. Anyway, this make money online blog is in WordPress 2.7.1 now!
How To Upgrade To WordPress 2.7.1
It’s not a big deal to upgrade to the latest wordpress version, but you’ve to do some backup works before you can proceed to upgrade your WordPress to the latest version. In order to upgrade your WordPress blog, you should follow these steps.
Quoted from WordPress.org :
- Backup your database. Read Backing Up Your Database for a detailed explanation.
- Backup ALL your WordPress files in your WordPress directory. Don’t forget your .htaccess file.
- Verify the backups you created are there and usable. This is essential.
- Deactivate ALL your Plugins.
- Ensure first four steps are completed. Do not attempt the upgrade unless you have completed the first four steps.
- Download and extract the WordPress package from http://wordpress.org/download/.
- Delete the old WordPress files on your site, but DO NOT DELETE
wp-config.phpfile;wp-contentfolder; Special Exception: thewp-content/cacheand thewp-content/plugins/widgetsfolders should be deleted.wp-imagesfolder;wp-includes/languages/folder–if you are using a language file do not delete that folder;.htaccessfile–if you have added custom rules to your.htaccess, do not delete it;robots. txtfile–if your blog lives in the root of your site (ie. the blog is the site) and you have created such a file, do not delete it.- Upload the new files from your computer’s hard drive to the appropriate WordPress folder on your site.
- Run the WordPress upgrade program and follow the instructions on the screen.
- Update Permalinks and .htaccess. Update your Permalink Structure and merge the custom rules, if necessary, into your .htaccess file.
- Install updated Plugins and Themes. Please review the list of Plugins that work in Version 2.7.1. Check for Theme Compatibility with 2.7.1 and ask your Theme author for any new version.
- Reactivate Plugins
- Add security key definitions to the wp-config.php file
- Review what has changed in WordPress.
These were the steps that I’d followed to upgrade my blog to the latest WordPress version. In fact, I didn’t backup my database and deactivated all the plugins, I’d forgotten and lazy as well. After these, I followed all the steps. Fortunately, I did upgrade my blog to the WordPress 2.7.1 successfully without any problem, but I do suggest you to follow the steps above, not to skip any steps to avoid any problems occur. WordPress 2.7.1 is almost the same with WordPress 2.7, perhaps you could check out the changes in WordPress.org.

Thanks Mike! Haha great to see that you’re the first to leave comment here! Keep in touch Mike! :D
Yeah, it’s quite boring to upgrade the WP. But sometimes I found it beneficial. So instead doing it manually, I use the plugin to upgrade it. Safe and easy =)
@alone,
Yea, I’m lazy to upgrade too so you can see that I still stick with WP 2.5 until last week. I’d faced some problems with the plugin, that was why I decided to upgrade to WP 2.7.1. I did it manually because my WP version was too old already, it can’t be done by using plugin. Between, I enjoyed the upgrading process and saw the successful even thought I’d gone through so many steps, I thought I would face some problems, luckily I didn’t face any problem. Thanks God! :D
I can see you upgraded from Version 2.5 of WordPress that’s why it’s little bit daunting for your part. However, if your version is 2.7 and above upgrading is just a push of a button since the upgrade option is already integrated with WordPress.
Happy blogging and congrats for your search engine ranking.
@MMOR,
Yea, that’s why I had to upgrade it manually. :)
Thanks buddy! I hope to see you come back soon. :D
Have you tried testing WordPress 2.8 Beta? It has some sweets enhancements to it. However I recommend that you use it on a test blog :)
@Lithiummind,
Oh really? I’ve yet to try WordPress 2.8 Beta, you know I’m not a WordPress latest version “chaser”, so I won’t simply upgrade if I’m doing well with the older WordPress version. Between, have it tried it as well? Is there any differences between WP 2.8 and WP 2.7.1? :D
Thanks for telling me about this Lithiummind!
