High Search Engine Ranking
This article is guested post by Caden Grant who blogs about how to Make Money Online.

If you have a blog, getting it indexed in the search engines is very important, of course. You want people to see your site that are actually looking for what your site has to offer. In other words, targeted traffic, and the more of it, the better.

Now, I’m not an expert at search engine optimization, but you don’t need to be an expert to rank #1 for a certain keyword in Google. These tips I’ve listed below have helped me rank for what I wanted to if followed, and if you follow them, you should also be able to rank for whatever you want to. So, below is a list of the most important key factors to ranking your website in the search engines.

Keywords – Using keywords correctly is very important. It’s the main idea behind search engine optimization. You want to use keywords on your website that people will actually type in the search engines. You want targeted traffic; people that are actually looking for what your site has to offer. Think about what the average person who’s maybe not the best with computers would type in. Use them in your content and links associated with your site. Use keywords in your title, content, etcetera. If you’re trying to maintain a blog and rank it, use keywords in the title of your posts and in the content of your post. Don’t spam your content with your keywords though, it looks unprofessional and spammy.

Title tag – This is a very important part of on page search engine optimization. Title tags can decide on where your site is placed in the search engine rankings. So if you want to rank for something like make money online or make money blogging, you should probably have those words in your title. It’s pretty obvious.

Build good content – Building good content is important in ranking well in the search engines. Try to build highly linkable content. What do I mean by highly linkable content? I mean when you write content so good/funny/interesting or anything really that it makes other people want to link to you on their site. This is also known as link bait. The more links you have leading to your site, the better you will rank in the search engines but I’ll get to that in a little while.

Update, update, update! – I can’t reiterate this enough. Updating is very important to the success of your blog; not only for search engine optimization, but keeping your visitors happy. Search engines like fresh new content. Also, if you are trying to run a successful blog, updating is very important. If you want to get readers for your site and keep them there, you need to update. There’s nothing more annoying on a blog then finding one you really like, coming back, and it not having a new post. If you have a blog, try to make a post daily or at least be consistent to keep your readers from leaving your site and subscribing and also to keep the search engines happy. So this tip is more of just a way to keep your visitors happy but search engines do like fresh content as well.

OK, so here’s the thing: the last 4 points I’ve mentioned are somewhat important but the most important parts of search engine optimization are what I’m about to talk about next; without these you would not rank. So when you are trying to rank on the first page for Google, these next two points are what you need to do to successfully complete that goal.

Back links – The most important part of search engine optimization ever in my opinion. The more links you have pointing to your site the better you will do in the search engines. You can rank for very competitive keywords as long as you have a certain number of back links. Get back links, but that’s not all there is to it. This brings me to my next point.

Anchor Text – The anchor text of the back link that is pointing to your site is also very important for ranking your website. It’s one of the most important parts in deciding which term your website will rank for. It’s been proven and I know first hand. I have a website that I got to rank on the first page result #3 out of 54,700,000 results for the keyword best myspace layouts. Why? Because the anchor text of the back links I had said Best Myspace Layouts. A few weeks after I started gaining back links with the anchor text best myspace layouts, I was on the second page, then the first page awhile later.

Now, before you decide how you’re going to go about making your site rank in Google, there’s one more thing I want to talk about. Long tail and short tail keywords. So what are long tail and short tail keywords? Well, for example, a long tail keyword would be something like Best Default Myspace Layouts while short tail would be something like Myspace Layouts or just Layouts.

What’s the difference? Well the difference is Myspace Layouts or Layouts (short tail keywords) get much more traffic than Best Default Myspace Layouts (long tail keywords) would. So why would you want to use long tail keywords if they don’t get as much traffic as short tail keywords? Well, short tail keywords are very much harder to rank for in Google than long tail keywords. So you can basically go two different ways. You can aim to rank for a bunch of long tail keywords, or just aim for a few short tail keywords.

If you’re a beginner, I suggest you aim for a bunch of long tail keywords because it will be much easier, quicker, and in time you will be able to get a significant amount of traffic. For example, if you take a short tail keyword that gets maybe 1,000,000 hits a month, and then 30 long tail keywords that get each maybe 33,000 hits a month, it equals about the same amount as the short tail keyword therefore you get about the same amount of traffic.

The information in this post is very informative. I think many people just starting out don’t understand the importance of SEO (or just don’t know what it is.)

I agree with going after longtail keywords, especially if you are a beginner of SEO. Another benefit of going after the longtails is once you gain ranking for them, as long as you are updating your blog and continuing, you will eventually gain ranking for the short tails.

Thank you for this great post, I think many beginners will find it very beneficial.

@ M.Davis, first we have to thanks Caden Grant for contribute this great guest post!

I agree what you point out about the longtail keywords, first we should aim for the longtails keyword because it’s more easier to optimize. With the longer age of your blog, backlinks and keyword optimization, I believe that we might be able to rank well in short tails keyword too.

Again, thanks Caden Grant for the great post! Thanks M.Davis for your comment as well! :)

“…I suggest you aim for a bunch of long tail keywords …”

I agree with this too. The little traffic on long tail keywords will eventually add up to more traffic in the end. It will definitely surpass that of short tail keywords on a consolidated basis.

When first starting out long tail keywords will generate more traffic to your site because your site will rank higher for those keywords quicker. If you can find a lot of low competition long tail keywords you can easily generate all the free traffic your need to promote your business.

@marcus,
I think that optimizing for the short keyword will be really challenging as there are tons of competitors out there. Between, you can easily get some traffic if you optimize for the long tail keyword, after awhile of long tail keyword optimization, you would definitely get a better rank for the short keyword as well.

Another great strategy to rank top in google is to get backlinks which i thnk u missed here is commenting on dofollow blogs or sites which are hard to search for but a speccifically dofollow focused campaign can bring wonders for any successful seo its implimentation is another field which needs expertise …

Hi,

Long term keyword are easy to rank and yes, you still need to create content to maintain your first position in Google search engine. Other marketers are going to outrank you if you content to be first place in Google.
