Making Money with Paid Post – An Important Thing That You Should Keep In Mind

by Lee Ka Hoong on December 16, 2009

I believe most of us know or even making a lot of money by writing paid posts or sometimes we called them sponsored posts. I don’t have to list the paid post sites because they’re getting familiar and popular from day to day.

Yes, we could make a lot of money through writing paid posts. Writing paid posts also creates the biggest portion of my online income. But there is an important thing that you should keep in mind while writing paid posts. I don’t know what the term that I should use for what I want to say but I believe you will understand what I mean.

As I said before, writing paid posts has the potential to give you a lot of money, especially if you have a collection of high-ranking blogs. And in fact, sometimes big amount of money might cause you to abandon what you should do for your blog.

I read a lot of different blogs per day and one thing that I notice is the some blogs seems to slowly changing their styles after the blog’s author starting to write paid posts. The styles change slowly and you even can compare a huge difference between each post!

Some people might say that I keep worrying about a small matter. Yes, it’s a small matter now but it could become bigger in the future. You might success in maintaining your blog’s niche, but if you cannot maintain your writing style, it could result a big problem to you. The readers will notice this, the traffic will decreased and you know what will happen after that. Yes, you can maintain your blog’s performance through link building, but it is not good enough as the advertisers nowadays are looking more than the PageRank and backlinks. Some high-paying advertisers are also looking for traffic, unique visitors, frequent visitors and the demographic data.

Filling the requirement that had been stated by the advertisers is not enough because some advertisers just only prefer the backlinks for them so they don’t care what you write as long as you give backlinks to them. But I see the trends are slightly and more advertisers are tend to pay for high-quality contents related to their sites or products and not just any posts than contains backlinks to their sites.

Advice

My advice is – maintain your writing style although you are writing paid posts. Make sure all the posts in you blog is in line with your writing and don’t change your style to somewhat ‘formal’ when writing paid posts. Write honestly and of course, make sure you fill all the requirements stated by the advertiser so they will be more than happy to pay you for your high-quality contents. And also don’t forget to improve your blogs’ ranks and traffics!

Actually there are a lot of important things to say when writing paid posts but I consider this is the most important one.

Happy blogging!

Honesty is something that is very hard to find these days, especially in the “make money online”, “internet marketing” and other profitable niches…

Just by writing honestly and expressing your real self you seriously stand out from the crowd.

I made $1,00 one month from one of my niche blogs using the technique. I am not sure I would ever do more than one a month on StandOutBlogger though.

I’ve never written a ‘paid post’ before. Is there a certain process for those sorts of things?

I’m assuming that the advertiser or product owner would approach the blogger first. Then the blogger would use the product, trial it out or whatever and if he/she feels it’s a good product then they would write up a review of the product (I can’t imagine they would write a bad one if they are paid for). The blogger then hands the draft of the review to the advertiser and if they approve then it goes live.

Am I on the right track here or is it even simpler where the advertiser may run the risk of getting a bad review of their product?

@Sarge,
Most of the advertisers will approach to you if they want to purchase “paid post” to promote their site or product. Other way, you can approach to advertiser and ask them whether they are also interested to purchase a “paid post” in your blog, you can ask the advertiser who had advertised in others’ blog. You may want to discuss with your advertiser, tell them you will write whatever thing based on your point of view, whether they can take good and bad review, if they just want good review (of course this is what advertiser want), then it depends on you to accept or decline.

It depends whether advertiser wants to read the review before publishing it. In my case, they didn’t require me to do so and I’ll write the review based on my point of view and just published it.

Hope my explanation makes you clearer about ‘paid post’. :)

Thanks Lee – much appreciated!

Do you have any examples of your own paid posts? When approaching product owners do you ask for a review copy or product to use for the review? Or maybe you get to keep the product?

I’m curious and something I’d consider doing in the future ;) Sounds like fun too!

@Sarge,
I rarely approach to product owners and ask for a review copy, I’ll just wait them to approach to me and give me a review copy. No worry Sarge, when an advertiser approaches to you then you’ll know how’s that. ;)

There are certain things that we should consider when writing sponsored post. We must consider both readers and advertisers. Then only we can determine how we will should write the post. For a niche blog, a blogger must only accept sponsored post related to their blog only.

The best approach is we have to balance the amount of paid post as compared to the normal blog post.

It is because at the moment we start to get greedy and start to focus in getting more money rather providing good content, our readers will start to notice it. It will may affect our reputation and therefore if is it still carry on, we may lost our traffics each day.

The key is content first, then content, content and finally paid post. :)

I agree with this one! The first time I accepted paid posts, my write ups changed from personal to formal thingy.. that’s why today, I got two different blogs, the one to accomodate paid posts and other commercialized posts and the other for my personal entries..

uhm, can you suggest sites that give you paid posts?

I have yet to write a paid post, have never been asked. I don’t really know if I would, I guess it depends on the product at hand.

Honesty on the net is something to not take likely. Some users would lie to get the post out or to make a few bucks, but not of all of us do it.

I have heard many users making a killing from paid posts and it’s good for them. We need to make money somehow and they are capitalizing on it now.

You do have to be careful with paid posts. If you do them too frequently, readers lose trust in your blog. Also, you have to be careful of the new FTC guidelines for paid reviews. I believe you now have to explicitly tell your readers when you are paid for a post. Really if you are going to take money to promote a product or service, you should have faith in that product or service. Ideally it would be something that you have actually used or would be willing to try.
