No More PageRank Sculpting!

by Lee Ka Hoong on September 15, 2009

It was not a new statement anymore and Matt Cutts announced and confirmed this statement around late Year 2008. When it comes to search engine optimization, there is no more pagerank sculpting on the web. A year ago, it was true that pagerank sculpting was still effective, but last year Matt Cutts explained the chances on his blog that there was no more pagerank sculpting but many people still didn’t notice the chances and using nofollow tag to all the outgoing links.

What Is PageRank Sculpting?

Have you heard of pagerank sculpting before? I believe that most of the beginners didn’t know about that and it’s good to write and explain about it to them. PageRank Sculpting is when you insert “nofollow” tag to any outgoing links in your blog, you won’t pass any link juice to the outgoing link, and you’re safe. Nonetheless, since Google announced that the PageRank Sculpting was not effective anymore, which means you won’t be saving any link juice in your blog anymore, your link juice will be disappeared to somewhere else even though you use nofollow tag on the outgoing link.

Pagerank Sculpting

In the image above, when you follow the outgoing link, you’ll pass your link juice to the outgoing link; but you nofollow the outgoing link, you will lose your link juice to somewhere else too. With that said, you’re no longer able to save your link juice. Also, it explains that there is no more pagerank sculpting on the web today. So you know that you’re no longer able to keep your link juice, so why you want to be selfish not giving out the link juice but through to the dustbin?

You’re recommended to use dofollow tag on all the outgoing links such as Top Commentators, Blogroll, Outgoing Link Post, and etc, I’ll be making some of the links in the comment section to be dofollow, so you can get some dofollow link love ONLY by leaving honor comment. The reason I use nofollow to the links in the comment section is because I believe that my blog will become a big hall for spammer if I make them dofollow, but I’ll be making them dofollow shortly and of course I may need to take longer time to read and approve comment. Bear in mind, I hate comments like “Great post!”, “I like your post!” and any one liner comment even though you’re real human, I’ll move my mouse to the “SPAM” button and click it!

Here is a video and Matt Cutts talked about NoFollow, he also mentioned that you can use nofollow tag on the outgoing link that is not trustworthy, and you know linking to bad site may hurt your blog. That’s the video that I think is worth sharing, be sure you watch the video and I believe that you’ll learn something new today.

I have not seen that video before Lee… thanks for sharing. It definitely shows that Google says that the days of NoFollow being the way to go are over, except for certain situations. I found it interesting too… that if you have a good FAQ page it should be dofollow as well. Very good information in a short video, as well as your post!

@Doug,
Thanks Doug for reading this post and glad that you like it! :) There is no wrong if we dofollow all the outgoing links in our blogs, but make sure you have to approve comment wisely and never link out to bad links, then you’ll safe. I see that many dofollow blog have higher Pagerank such as ExtremeJohn has a PR4. :)

Hey Lee,

Thanks for highlighting this. I was still thinking that PR should not be leaked to outbound links you dont trust. I just watched a recent video by Matt on this where he mentioned to make them nofollow.

I think this video is old. I suggest you keep then nofollow in comments and only keep them dofollow in top comments. That way you will keep out spam to some extent and also encourage people to come back for comments.

It will give you repeat blog traffic in a way as only link juice will come from repeat comments and making it to top comments section.

This is just my opinion. You might want to explore the keyword LUV plug though. It is a good plugin and will also help reduce spammy comments.

@Ravi,
Thanks for your recommendation Ravi, I have the same thought before too, if I make my comment dofollow then I may need to spend some times reading comment and choose whether to approve or decline. Anyway, I think there is a wordpress plugin named Lucia’s Linklove, this plugin allows you to dofollow or nofollow every single comment, but I don’t know how true is it, I’ve not tried it yet.

But what you said is true, I will need to re consider. Also, I’ll have to re active the keywordLuv plugin which was already in my FTP for months. lol! Again, thanks for your opinion Ravi, I appreciate it! :)

Yes I do agree with you about the spammer. When we use Dofollow tag in commnet section, a lots of comment spam that we’ll get. It happened to me. If we insist to use DoFollow tag in comment, after 3-4days the article was published we should close the comment. For me, it doesn’t matter either comment on DoFollow or NoFollow blog if you want to use commenting to build your backlink. Just go to your others blog and do comment.That’s all. Make sure its worth comment

@Een Rockstar,
I don’t really care to leave comment in blog which is dofollow or nofollow, I leave comment on a blog post because I have something to say. Also, it helps on building relationship and branding too. Nowadays, I don’t really care about dofollow backlinks, even though it’s very important for a make money online niche blog as we want to rank higher to make more money, but it doesn’t matter because we can build it slowly. :D

@EarningStep,
I prefer to use nofollow in the past, but I’m going to make my blog a dofollow blog. Dodollow blog doesn’t decrease the quality of the blog on Google’s eyes, as long as you don’t follow bad links. Other than these, nothing more you need to fear about.

Hi,
This is weird…I have no idea how your blog popped up on my screen, but I have to say I am glad it did. I just started blogging about 2 months ago. There is a ton I realized I need to learn. I signed up for a good class and of course I got excited and started doing everything wrong. LOL. Mainly, I like to write about different subjects, so got really sidetracked from a niche blog I thought about. It takes me a lot of time to write, and also do the website AND the SEO. I think it is good that Google is axing the link juice seepage from do-follow. When people are afraid of loosing juice, then they selfishly cut off commenters with some good posts. I happened to post a good reply about some scammers on Yedda. A gal picked it up for her blog. She asked if she could use it and I said yes, but she did not give me any credit. I have posted a comment on her blog related to her content, and I find she gives links to only her friends. So really I am wasting my time reading her posts because she is being very selfish.

The whole spirit of the web started out with sharing information. Now it is becoming a dog-eat-dog world of competition for the almightly buck. Unfortunately, we all loose out if we do not share and exchange ideas. There are so many interesting things on the web, and one person cannot find them all on their own, so sharing links on a page leads your readers to other things, and I think most people appreciate that. I for one, am loyal to blogs that are not selfish, can give me something new and interesting to discover. Like what you offered above…new stuff I have not seen before.

I will make one observation and that is if you want to go mainstream in US, you might consider having a copywriter or editor. Your English is pretty good, but we native speakers can tell when content is not accurate. If you need help, I will be glad to do a couple quick rewrites for you. If not, that is ok, too. After all, I’m here reading your blog, so you “hopped the pond”, so to speak.

@Robin,
Hey Robin thanks for reading my blog and great to see you here! I think is not a big deal to give dofollow link juice to people who contribute the ideas, I usually use dofollow tag to the external link that I need to refer, Google would appreciates if you share something relevant to your post and you guide your readers to read something useful further, that’s a good practice. In the world wide web, we can’t be selfish by not giving credit to the person that we refer to, we need to build up healthy relationship with anyone else on the internet, this may help on our online businesses in the future, who knows? :)

Robin, I admit that my writing skill is poor as it’s not my mother language. Anyway, I’ve sent you an email and we can talk more about it in email. :D

It’s essentially becoming more & more obvious to me that you are indeed evolving as blogger. Firstly, you are using respectful references to your own statements & you have demonstrated confidence in what you are suggesting to your readers by action by giving do follow to top commentators & blogroll. Acton indeed speaks louder than words.

@Mazuki,
Spammer can be real human who leaves one liner comment like “Great Post!”, I known them as spammer as well. That’s what I don’t want to see in my blog, I hate such comment.

You can simply download the dofollow wordpress plugin to dofollow all the comments. Comment Luv is a another plugin which links to commenter’s latest post link.

He means the link juice will be disappeared to the air, if you don’t follow the link, then both parties will not getting any link juices. But be sure you follow healthy outgoing link, otherwise Google will penalize you. :)

It doesn’t matter to use nofollow in your blog, it doesn’t hurt your blog. The thing is that you waste the link juice instead of giving to your readers. :)

While google sidelines the Page Rank thing one has to work on finding more ways to be properly visible on the net.Sure allowing Do Follow makes your blog open to spammers but you can work out there as well.Most spammers spoil your blog but there are some who might prove ‘useful’ to your blog instead!.One just has to be smart enough to outsmart them out there! All the best.

@Garry,
Dofollow may attract more spammers to leave comment in my blog, but I do believe that Akismet will do the work to filter all the spam comments before reaching to me. Also, I’ll be more strict when come to approving comments. I hate spam comment and I love people who contributes opinion and shares experiences.

@gautam hans,
Pagerank sculpting is something that you can keep your link juice if you use nofollow tag on the outgoing links, but when there is no more pagerank sculpting, this means that your link juice will still be flowing out even though you use nofollow tag on the outgoing links. When it comes to search engine ranking, nofollow link doesn’t help; but when it comes to brand building or referral traffic building, no matter nofollow or dofollow link, it helps.

It’s fine Gautam, I won’t hate it, as long as you say something here instead of just “Great Post”. :D
