Knowing how to build an authority site and make money online are inter-connected. Just like in the real estate market. The houses that get the biggest asking prices, are the ones with the best views and locations. Same thing applies to the internet marketing game. The best real estate for your site is on page 1 that makes the most money.
Today, I will be covering a variety of information, including the importance of keyword research and why its the foundation of everything else you do online, selecting a domain name, back linking strategies, niche marketing, and software tools that can improve your productivity. Sit back, get some coffee and have a read over this article, as I include some of my top insider techniques to ranking in the search engines.
My methods are about ranking on top of Google. Its mainly because they are king of the search engines. However, my methods will still work on the other search engines.
So, what is Google really looking for to rank you on page 1?
There is one key piece of information that they need to see, to rank your your website over all the others. They need a way to determine that you have the most relevant information to offer their customers. Sounds simple enough, but, as you will discover in this article, actually accomplishing it involves a lot of sweat equity.
Let’s first define what an authority website actually is. In my opinion, its when the search engines rank you on page 1 that shows you have gained trust rank with them. Some websites will be monster websites with hundreds of pages. While others, will be highly targeted and only have 5 or 10 pages of content. Either way, any website can become an authority site, if you put in enough work.
How Important is Keyword Analysis to Your Success Online?
In my opinion, making money all hinges on your ability to pick the right keywords by doing thorough research. It really is the key to setting a solid structure and foundation for your website to rank in the future. Many people, especially newbies make the critical mistake of going after too big of keywords like, home based business or make money. In case you intend on competing against the Big Dogs on the internet, realize they have their “A Game” on and know exactly what they are doing. How about you?
Niche Markets – Understanding The Internet Game
In my view, its best to concentrate on long tail keywords and niche markets with low competition. That will be your best chance of ranking more quickly and actually making some money. Start with the main key phrase, scroll down to locate a long tail key phrase that you like. Then, take that long tail key phrase and drill down more to find other long tail keywords in your niche market. I would recommend looking for monthly search results in the range of say, 1000 to 5000 or so. I know it doesn’t seem like many searches per day and its not.
But, here’s my thought process for making this suggestion to you. By starting off at very low terms, ranking for them, then adding more low keyword terms, you will over time build up your site. After a period of time, your website suddenly starts to gain some trust rank and authority with Google and the other search engines. This gives you a platform to go after bigger keyword terms in the future. Its all about building a solid and sturdy foundation.
Think of it like building a home. You want to make sure your footings (the base), is set up properly to handle the actual structure and weight of the home. Likewise, you want a strong and sturdy website. Get this wrong and don’t invest enough time into keyword research, you will only get frustrated and have a weak website and likely not make money online. The idea is to build your confidence in ranking and getting a little coin in your pockets.
One other important factor that you need to verify prior to selecting your keywords, is to check on Google, to determine what your competition is like on the first page. To get more accurate results, place quotes around the phrase. Then check it without quotes for the overall results. The more I examine this area of really targeting your keywords, like niche marketing and niche marketing ideas, the more I am convinced that this is actually the way in which to develop a solid business over the internet.
Domain Names
So what’s in a domain name anyways? Well, its the portal to the world and it can tell a great deal about who and what you are about. With that in mind, its ideal to use your keyword phrase in your domain name. If its a low competitive term, by having the exact keyword as a domain name, you maybe able to in some instances, get ranked more quickly. However, its only a guideline. You certainly don’t have to, but it will help identify what your central focus is about to G and the other search engines. You can even add a prefix like “about” before your keyword, if the phrase is not available.
I was reading several months ago, Matt Cutts, the Google guy who stated that when registering websites, make sure its for more than 1 year. He advocates going for 5 or 10 years. Its really about whether the search engines look at your new site as spam or not. By registering for a longer period of time, they know its not some spam site. I suggest a minimum of 2 years or longer. Now lets move onto some other really important stuff.
Getting Back Links – Why Are They Important
Back Links Explained
A back-link is when one site points back to another site. Simple enough – right? Well, its a little more involved than that, because you need to properly optimize your website. Basically, the more quality one way links you get, the higher in the search engines your web site will rank over time. The website with the better quality links will generally do the best. Of course there are other elements involved, but, it is one of the keys to ranking.
You should also spend some time to have a proper internal link structure. That means, configuring your internal pages and posts. For example, I would point some of my internal pages or posts to my home page. You certainly don’t want to point them all because that doesn’t look natural. Other times, you can point internal pages to other pages. Again, not all of them and just mix it up to look natural.
Where To Get One Way Links
Obtaining one way quality one-way links, is about getting as much content out there to as many places as you can. Many people will try and post the same article to multiple article directories. Don’t do that, because based on real life experience, it doesn’t help you. It won’t hurt you and you won’t be penalized. But, if you want to get full link juice from your articles, ensure they are unique at least 30 percent plus. I recommend actually getting as high as possible.
Now remember, when you have a new website, the last thing you want to try and do is get like, 1000 back links during your first week. That won’t look natural and you could get penalized by G. Anytime I start a new site as an example, I will post 10 to 15 articles during the first week. In the coming weeks and months, I will gradually increase the amount each week. I want this to look as natural to Big G as possible.
There is no hard and fast rule for how many articles you submit each week. You can test this out yourself and see what results you get. I have other websites that are true authority sites that have been around for 2 or 3 years and feel comfortable getting dozens of links per day. If you use a private back linking network, getting 100 or 200 links per day is not unreasonable in my opinion. I would only do that for established websites.
Getting back links is boring work. You were expecting something different from me? Seriously, you write, post, write some more and post some more. Some days, its like watching paint dry. But you need to work through those times and look at what your long term goals are. Being able to fire my boss in the near future is very motivating for me. What motivates you every day?
The more quality places you can post your content to, the better off you will be in the long term. With that in mind, begin by submitting your content to Go Articles and Ezine Articles. I also like other places like Idea Marketers. They have all been around for many years and have gained a lot of trust with the search engines. You can search online for hundreds of good quality places, so don’t think you only have a few to choose from.
You can also incorporate posting comments at Blogs, websites and forums. Keep in mind, when posting to other places, try to ensure they’re do follow links. That merely means, the link juice will be passed onto your link and finally to your website. I have read and heard some people say that making comments to “nofollow” places is fine. Sure, but it depends on why you are doing that. If its from a marketing standpoint and building relationships, I have no issue with that. But, if you want to rank your site, then I would not waste my time, at least initially.
How to Triple Your Article Marketing Efforts and Get Increased Back Links
There are number of ways to increase your article marketing efforts. For instance, you could outsource some of your article writing by hiring people to do ghost writing. It can get a little expensive, especially if you are just starting off. You can take your original article and change it up and re-write it yourself over and over again. That way, you can place to different article directories. The problem with that method, it takes a lot of extra time, which many of us don’t have. The alternative approach is using something like an article rewriter or what some call article spinners. What do you think your competition is using?
There you have an in depth analysis of creating an authority site. All of it begins with comprehensive keyword research and selecting those niche markets with little competition. Then try and match up your long tail keyword with a domain name. Finally, work on getting those important one way links. If you are not willing to invest the time and work into your online business, then nothing else matters. If you want freedom, there is always a price to pay.

About this sentence, how will i know if the website is already established? does it mean it already has page rank? like pr3 or 4? thanks
Thanks for sharing.
Very comprehensive cover on most of SEO ranking related topics in one article. Thanks for sharing. I’ve been using Article Spinner/Submitter as well on my newly created blog but like you say, it makes Big G thinks that think that’s it’s not natural hence I have stop it.
Hi
You can use a private network for back linking, but before you invest the money, there are many options out there that won’t cost you money. There are a number of private networks that claim to offer a lot, but very few in my opinion are any better than the free article directories and ezine places that have authority.
Yes, utilizing a private network is fine, but you need to do some research.
Absolutely you can get 100 to 200 links a day from well established sites, but new ones, you don’t want to get your website flagged by G.

Hi Darrell,
Able to recall where’s the permlink to what Matt says about domain age? It would be nice to take a look at what he says.
If G is ranking based on domain age, how would they tell when your domain is going to expired. On the other hand, if the check is on when the domain is registered make more sense as it tells how long the domain has been around. Renewing domain name for more than a year would certainly help in case you forgot to renew it. Some domain registrar like godaddy allows you to choose auto renewal. I received a notice 2 months before one of my domain expire.
Who knows when a domain is nearing to expiry date, the owner might have contacted H1N1 and lying in the hospital, thus he won’t be able to renew the domain on time. If renewal is done after the expiry date and your domain age is reset back to new registration, I guess that would have a negative impact on the owner. How would G see a new domain with tons of links to it –
Hi Wilson
I looked around for it, but can’t remember where on his site or at another forum he mentioned about registering your domain for more than 1 year. If you do some searches in the seo community on domain age etc, you should be able to find something within a short period of time. Google and the search engines know how old your site is by the index date at a minimum. I am going to try and find an answer for your other part of the question on how they know if your website is registered for a certain number of years. I am positive I read it, but of course can’t find it right now.
Thanks for the comment and questions
An excellent summation; a definite keeper. But I really don’t see anyhow a 5-10 page site can be true authority.

You wrote that commenting on no-follow blogs is useless from goolge point of view. It only helps to make a relationship stronger and in marketing.
i can’t fully agree on it. As i if i do comment on non-follow flogs then also sometimes i do see a link from that site in mine WP dashboard and also in Googles webmaster tools.
Also, i have noticed that comments author urls also do get a place in Google search results
How come that then?
Is it completely useless from Google point of view commenting on no-follow blogs?

I never realized that having your domain name registered for more than one year was important. Do you think Google looks at the overall age of a site if you renew the domain every year, for several years?
