Oh, and I also found that 4 Indispensable Elements of Links Exchanges very informative. I follow that blog often, but I also often miss a post or few, and this one is very important, because much of the traffic comes to my blog from only a few link exchanges.
Link exchanges are more powerful than commenting on other blogs and posting replies on forums, because the link/banner to your site is always somewhere around and can be seen by the visitor of the site that your link/banner is placed to.
However, I still like the search engine traffic the most, it is simply the best!

I am a little surprised you included a link to an article all about link exchanges. This used to be a very popular SEO strategy that worked very well. Over the years this link building strategy really went downhill. For one, the search engines (particularly Google) did not like this artificial link building. So they took some steps to limit the benefit of such links. They tried targeting any links from pages named links.html, resources.html, etc. They likely also lowered the value of links where a reciprocal link exists.
Also it has become much tougher to find good link partners. Most of the websites still using this strategy are low quality sites that will not help you much at all. Many of those people make a point of burying your link deep within their website.
I have stopped exchanging links, but I still regularly get link exchange requests. I do take the time to check out the websites in question, but still I think I have only exchanged links with 1 website in the last couple years.
@Metal Briefcases,
Yea link exchange doesn’t help much in improving search engine ranking as well as Pagerank in these days as Google doesn’t really like it. Nicholas has different point of view in link exchange where he mentioned about exchanging banner instead of link. I found it quite interesting and it should be something that Google likes instead of link exchange. Myself also stop doing link exchange for quite some times unless I have very good blog buddy and the blog is worth to do link exchange, otherwise I’ll say no and sorry.
Lee, really nice how you used excerpts to help support the links.
I agree with your comment above about link exchange. I prefer to just link out to cool people writing cool stuff and not worry about it.
