The Next Generation Google Search Engine : Google Caffeine

by Lee Ka Hoong on August 12, 2009

Google recently announced the newly search engine will be replacing the current Google search engine soon. According to the Official Google Webmaster Central Blog, over the past few months, a large team from Google has been working on a secret project, they called it as “Caffeine“, which is a next-generation architecture for Google’s web search.

You’ve been reading about make money online by using various method in this blog, I’m sure you do like to read some current SEO news from the world wide web too. It’s important to know and understand the current search engine news too as we’re internet marketers who are trying to make money online by relying on the search engine, as you know search engine traffic converts well compare to direct traffic or social traffic.

Bing and Yahoo was recently combined as one search engine and they just launched a newly search engine optimization toolkit, this SEO toolkit tells you what and how you should do to improve your search engine ranking in Bing Yahoo search engine. You can read the great write up from Nicolas Prudhon about this search engine optimization toolkit. So this Google Caffeine shows that Google is not sitting and doing nothing, Google doesn’t want anyone else to take over their place too, it goes the same with anyone else who sit at the first place in search engine, no people likes anyone to take over their places too.

The New Google Search Engine : Caffeine

As we know, Google was keep changing on their algorithm about how to rank a site, or how to justify Pagerank for a site, so Google wants to improve their search engine this time. There is no changes on the interface but they work on something that we couldn’t be able to see. So, here is few things that Google will be concerned about :

1) More efficient and faster in term of crawling and indexing pages.
2) Crawl more pages on the web.
3) Rank and return the most relevant pages as quickly as possible.

Try to have a look on the Google Caffeine beta version : http://www2.sandbox.google.com/
Google
* Current Google Search Engine

Google Caffeine
* Google Caffeine

As I tried to search “Google Caffeine” in both of the current Google search engine and Google Caffeine search engine, both of the results that I get will be almost the similar, but if you look at the screenshots above, the current Google search engine took 0.25 seconds to come out the search result, while Google Caffeine search engine just took 0.08 seconds to come out the search result. It saves a lot of your time by using the newly search engine.

Anyway, the secret project “Caffeine” isn’t completely finished yet, so we will not know how the newly Google Search Engine will be looked like. Google is trying to improve the search engine, so Google encourages you to use the search engine and spot the differences between Google’s current search results and their new system, simply give your feedback about Caffeine.

Conclusion

Google has done a big move on the improvement of the search engine. According to Matt Cutt, you’ll be able to see how’s your site rank in the search engine when the Google Caffeine replaced as the real next generation Google Search Engine in the next few weeks or months. There will be more and more competition for the keyword that you optimize and rank for due to more pages will be crawled on the web, so you need to work harder and get prepared for the coming Search Engine Optimization War!

How do you think about the next generation Google Search Engine, Caffeine? It’s good or bad for you?

@Compute Live,
Yea, Caffeine is faster than the current Google search engine, Google is improving their search engine right now, I don’t think there is any search engine that can beat them up. :D

@George,
Yea, Caffeine is definitely faster than the current Google search engine. It’s efficiency and also provides accurate search result to the users, that’s a very good improvement for Google search engine. :)

I checked the rankings for a couple of my sites using the sandbox yesterday and they’re pretty much the same! While this isn’t excellent news (my rankings aren’t any better) it’s definitely good news (they’ve not dropped)!

@James,
Congrats! That’s a good news for you if your ranking in Caffeine is still maintained, I tried to search mine and it dropped a few places behind, anyway I can still improve it. But don’t be so happy so fast because the system is still in beta version, so stay tuned and wait for the updates. :)

Lee,

I have a question regarding this. If Google is to switch to a new platform, does this mean the SERPs for all websites are reset? Meaning that everyone starts from scratch? I’m assuming the more likely act by Google would be to transfer everything over from the old search engine. Just want to make sure though.

KaHoongChai (1324 comments.) August 16, 2009 at 12:06 am

@The Gooroo,
I think they will be transferring all the data from old search engine to the new search engine, but the new search engine will be indexing more pages and faster than before, so your ranking will be reflected very frequent. So be sure you work harder to maintain your ranking or improve it. :D

Jacob Yap (6 comments.) August 16, 2009 at 1:33 am

@Gooroo: Google will keep the current data, and they are just upgrading. But Google will reindex with new formula once Caffeine is done.

Can’t wait to see Google new products and features – Google Wave, Chrome OS etc.. =)

I’m not surprised that google is enhancing their search engines. This company is one of the best forward looking companies in the world. Just when the competition thinks they can grab the upper hand, google comes out with something new. When it comes to my search engine ranking,I’m just hoping they don’t change their ranking algorithms, because I have been able to grab high rankings for several competitive terms.

Google definitely likes to stay on top of the competition. I always thought Google was fast with results… but this new version seems like it screams! I definitely don’t think Yahoo or Bing will ever take a very big chunk out of Google’s search engine dominance. They also provide so many really cool free tools that are all connected to your gmail account, that they have us trapped ;)

@Doug,
Yes I agree with you Doug, so far there is no search engine that could beat down Google search engine, one of the reason will be the free tool that you mentioned above, another will be Google indexed pages faster, and it provides more relevant information to the users too. No matter how, I’ll still prefer to use Google search engine instead of Bing or Yahoo. ;)

When will Yahoo come out the new search engine? Or is it Yahoo will let the war between Bing and Caffein, then attack in the middle of the war.

Well I heard about Google Caffeine. But one thing to share with you. In those 2 pictures u have added, that red mark in time is not exactly the good way to say that Caffeine is fast. Becoz, it will be a changing one every time.

KaHoongChai (1324 comments.) August 16, 2009 at 12:12 am

@BlogrPro,
I admit that we couldn’t be able to get the correct result on the timing, but no matter how, the search time for Caffeine is always faster than the old search engine if you realize, perhaps you can try to search something for few times in Caffeine and current search engine, compare them and let us know the result in term of the search time :D

This is great for all of us because Google is still at the top and without them, I can just imagine how much traffic we will lose…lol.

I tried it – can see Caffeine is faster, but really looking forward to it indexing even more pages! Like many people, I rely on Google at work and at home, and the better it works the better off I am.

KaHoongChai (1324 comments.) August 20, 2009 at 10:56 pm

@Christie,
That’s great if Google indexes more pages, but be bear in mind, more pages means more competition, so you need to work harder to compete with others. For users, that’s definitely a great news! :)

I saw a video by Matt Cutts (engineer at google) and according to him the new engine should not affect much of the results we see.

Honestly, I don’t know how true that is. Even without changing the engine the results always change :)

But per Matt the new engine can index and crawl faster with basics around PR and backlinks remaining same. So search results should remain same to lot extent.

@Ravi,
Yeap there is no changes on the search engine, just index and crawl faster. With that said, we need to work harder to improve our blog so that competition can’t beat you down because there will be more and more competition on the search engine.
