The Passionate Bloggers – Why They’re Successful

It’s almost a truism in the blogosphere- The really passionate bloggers are by far the most successful. It’s no coincidence. The best bloggers are both experts and advocates, critics and investigators. They know their subjects better than almost anyone else, and their readers are there to learn as much as to enjoy. These bloggers are highly motivated, interesting people, and the online awards and trophies many of them get are well-earned.

The heart of a passionate blogger

To give some perspective to the impact of these high value bloggers, a bit of history is required. In the early days of blogging in the late 90s, the “messianic” bloggers, the original ranters and ravers, had centre stage. Within about two years, the expert bloggers had obliterated them. At the head of these experts were the passionate bloggers. It was a case of ranting vs. relevance, and it was no contest.

The first thing that happened was that people that previously didn’t even know what a “blog” was (and were pretty sure they didn’t want to know) were reading the new species of blogger. The blog materials were all new, and all in areas where expertise really matters. They earned credibility from experts in industry and business, then from the corporate heavyweights.

The passionate bloggers then snowballed, as other experts were convinced the new medium was effective. The result was that some of the hardest commercial heads on Earth were completely won over. They started hiring bloggers. Even the news media, which had previously opposed blogs tooth and claw, couldn’t get enough bloggers.

The passion effect

If you’ve ever been taught by a real expert, you’ll know what an experience it can be. These people teach brilliantly and naturally, seemingly effortlessly. You can get more useful information and practical knowledge from an expert in a few minutes than in a year from less able teachers. Add passion, and you learn even more, and it’s fun.

They also make their subjects interesting and engaging. Think of the most mundane subject, like toothpicks. A passionate blogger will teach you the entire history of toothpicks, including the hygiene, and will also teach you special games you can play, and probably how to build a replica of the Valley of the Kings with toothpicks. They’d also run a contest for toothpick designs, with corporate awards and a review system where people could vote for their favorite designs. From a not-very-fascinating subject to a thing you can’t wait to read about and see is only so far.

The passionate bloggers are also incredible motivators. A passionate blogger on graphic art can have readers checking courses in graphic art within minutes of reading them. The passionate blogger’s perspective creates real drivers for the readers, as well as providing invaluable professional knowledge.

If you’re a blogger, find your passion. That’s what you should be blogging about. These are the things you love, the things you really care about, and you know these subjects better than your bank statement. Don’t be surprised if you also create a brand new career for yourself in the process.

Very well said. I’ve written for many different blogs, and always the ones I actually have some knowledge about and enjoy are the ones I have fun writing and turn out the best. Writing about your passions is easy because you love what you’re talking about. Don’t just pick a subject that is “hot” at the moment, because even if it’s successful, you will get bored.

In life, not just blogging, doing what your passionate about is the key to a happy existence.

Marcela, very well written post. I think everyone agrees that passion plays a big part in succeeding in almost everything we do and blogging is no exception.
However, I think there are some bloggers who tend to over play the “passion”.

  9. seph from corporate branding says:

Yeah…Passion is the differentiating factor. If you start blogging because you want to make money, you will definitely stop if the money doesn’t come. This doen’t only apply to blogging but also to the choice of career. People should learn to choose a career which matches their passion and the money will come in later.
