The Right Work From Home Situation

Finding the right work from home situation is usually made more difficult because of so many scams running in the mail, in our emails and just online in general. Working out of your home can be just as rewarding as a telecommute job where you have an employer but you do not see them every day.

Self-discipline, determination and a lot of self-esteem is all it takes to start a home business. Discipline to sit down at the computer at nine o’clock in the morning. Every morning or whatever hour you have set as your start to work time time. And discipline to not give up half way through the job because realize you cannot go to the water cooler and chat with so and so to get their thoughts. Or determination to not give up before you even start the project because of not being used to this new career.

Determination to meet that deadline and hope the client pays you on time for the work you have done. The hope that now you have more projects for you to start to work on. Working from home can be a rewarding experience or it can be a nightmare. Remember why you quit your old job and started this new career at home. You said this would have the perfect hours and the perfect work that you wanted to do.

Perhaps these were a few of the reasons you wanted to work for yourself, and those reasons are:

  1. Least to no paper work at all.
  2. You can email or you can upload the daily coursework to your boss.
  3. Less hassle from the people at the office
  4. You get the responsibility of meeting the deadlines without someone reminding you.

Some reasons why working from home may become a hassle are computers do have a bad tendency to break down and when it does it will be you paying for having it repaired. And then while it is being repaired you will need a rental. Sometimes the best thing is to not get caught like this is to have a spare personal computer on hand. Some of the perks to working at home are you finish up one assignment early you can either goof off the rest of the day or start the other assignment early. Also you set your own hours and there is no office politics; and there is no daily commute except from the couch to the computer therefore you save money on gasoline.

Of course, there are always some changes to be made to your daily routine. First thing to getting started would be answering your emails to see how well yesterday’s business went in order to proceed with today’s order of business. The second thing, if there were no changes stated in the emails, then pick up where you left off last night. Working from home has it perks and it has its down sides. With all that has been talked about by everyone who has ever had a home-based business, most will probably tell you that it is worth it to wake up to having your own business your home you just have to find the right work from home career.

A backup plan is really essential if you’re going to be working from home. Since you’re either freelancing or working for a company from home there will be a bunch of little things that you’ll totally forget.

Computer crashes are one thing but you also have to take into consideration about you becoming sick without medical insurance. What happens when you’re out of the job for 2 weeks – big uh-oh.

Although they’re all something that could be around the corner, being your own boss is definitely worth the risk.

Working from home does have its perks, but it is not for everyone. Some people just need that social interaction and don’t enjoy long hours of working alone. It is also very tough to maintain a proper schedule without slacking off. People assume since you’re at home that you have limitless free time. So do have to be willing to say no to friends when you have work to do.

We’ve worked from home for the past 25 years, so working from home has always been right for us. We’ve been our own boss and we have owned our own business, so the question isn’t the right situation, is staying motivated when no one is telling us to work! :)

Murlu:

Your totally right, one of those things I’d recommend would be a portable hardrive or flashdrive

I’m lucky in that I live somewhere where our medical is covered for us.
(Canada) but for me when I first left my management position to work from home, I had alot of fears, money of course being one of the biggest, and like you say those things we need that money buys.

However I soon found (within 3 or 4 months) that I was able to make more online that I was offline. And I really liked the fact that If I worked longer hours (which sadly I do lol) then I generally get paid more!

Like you say, the benefits have definely been worth the risk!
I for one have never been happier!

Three words! “No more Traffic!” lol

Yes I do wish I could stop dealing with traffic everyday. I should use that as part of my motivation to work back to being my own work at home boss. As for medical, I am in Canada as well and being self employed did affect my medical as I was suddenly paying for things like dental all out of my own pocket. Since I had to get my wisdom teeth removed, that was a huge expense.

Jeremy, your right. I for one work much harder now than I did before, the thing is now though it doesn’t feel like work. The schedule thing took me a couple of weeks to work out, but if anything, I have a harder time scheduling time “not to work” now.

Plus my old commute was about an hour and a half of my day, not to mention the getting ready, getting dressed up, fixing my tie etc. All that time is mine now.

I will admit the social aspect of it has changed quite a bit for me. I do still miss seeing my collegues on a day to day basis, and I have noticed my social world switching back to social media a lot more (ugh facebook) :)
Though even that has started to look alot different.

Coleen:

Thanks for the comment Colleen, I’m assuming by your title your a real estate agent? If so your work takes you outside a fair bit which is nice too.
I’ve recently started experimenting with different locations around my city, as like Jeremy pointed out I was spending alot of time working alone. (even worse I tended to be hiding out in the basement as it’s cooler in our house) So I’ve loaded up my laptop, and headed over to Chapter’s or Starbucks for an hour or two, I’ve done some work in several of city parks, I’ve even gone and worked by my old office lol.

But at the end of the day, I’m much happier.

We need to have a strong determination and independent if we really wish to work at home. Laziness is my main problem. I still need someone to supervise me so that i can build up the habit to work at home. Thanks for sharing! :)

After decades of working for moron, incompetent bosses, back stabbing , badmouthing, demoralising, gripping peers and ungrateful staffs, I decide to call it quit to my full time job. Many said I had lost my marbles leaving a high 5 figure a year job and with army of workers at my disposal. Maybe you call that mid career/life crisis. Still need a bit of getting use to as the tenacity to work around the clock since the computer is always around.

Work from home is also a very good idea. There are some advantage of work from home, like you can set up your working hour, no boss etc. But one proper strategy should be maintained for doing work from home. Like we do work in office, there present one systematic work schedule and we have to do work according to that system. While we do work at home we have to maintain that system.

Yeah.. I guess a lot of people love working from home where you can feel the freedom of working yourself without any protocol to follow as you’re in your own home!

But we also have to keep in mind that working at home also needs discipline and punctuality. Nobody will pay you for nothing. Most successful bloggers mentioned that they work based on specific working time and some of them even working more than office hours!

Working from home might sound easy but you have to be good at arrange your working time and style. Once you got it, I guess you’d found your way to success :)

Many of the upsides to working on your own, are also the downsides to working on your own; being ON YOUR OWN.

no one to push and prod is not always a good thing, if you lack any sort of self discipline, it is not for you.

In this case it would help a lot to have some good friends who are in a similar situation. You can push each other to work harder and achieve more success. It also helps to have someone to bounce ideas off of. Just because you are working on your own, it does not mean you can’t have people supporting you emotionally.

Yup, some of these friends are online friends doing very similar thing online. Compete and compliment, strike to co-exist. Blogging is one online community that made my days when I’m slacking. :)

That’s where self-motivation can play it’s part.As Jeremy said emotional support from friends and family can do a world of good for the work at home professionals.

Seriously working from home is no child’s play.If you’re not a self-motivated person then it’s not for you.I sometimes think that it takes more dedication and hard work than regular jobs to be successful in working at home.
