Top #1 List Building Mistake That Most Internet Marketers Are Making!

I believe that most of you have already known that start building a list is the best way to make money online. Yes, this is definitely true. And we have been taught that we should offer something free so that people will subscribe into our list. In short, internet marketers exchange people’s emails with the freebies offered.

This method works, indeed. People love free stuff, include you and me.

After that, internet marketers want to make more money, and they create more freebies to begin with another email campaign. They keep on repeating this, because most of the gurus are telling you that: “People like free stuff, so offer something free to collect leads is the best way.”

Yes, it’s true. It works. However, it’s a mistake actually.

Why it’s a mistake?

The truth is, you can make money by doing that, but you cannot become a super affiliate and earn big money by doing that, unless you’ve few millions of subscribers (which is another version of story).

If you’re building a list by offering something free, your subscribers can consist of freebies seekers and potential buyers (proven action takers). However, normally freebies seekers will more than potential buyers. Freebie seekers will never make any purchase when you promote affiliate products. They will never take out their credit cards, or maybe they don’t even have credit cards.

Get rid of freebies seekers – Build a buyer list!

It’s fine if you create your first and second lists by offering something free, perhaps you need more attention, credibility and experience in that niche. However, after you’ve been in the niche for months or years, there are no points for you to keep repeating this method.

In fact, you ought to start building a list which consists of proven action takers only! By doing this, your list will have a higher conversion rate, because they’re potential buyers! Simply, all you’ve to do is getting them to spend some money before subscribing into your list.

Let me explain a simple thing that you might haven’t realized it.

If you’re a product merchant, you would have already known that you need to ask your customers to opt-in your customer list – It’s actually a list of buyers! They’re your customers, they are proven action takers, they’re people who will spend money in getting what they want and like!

If you ever buy any digital product, most of those merchants will ask you to subscribe into a list before you can get into the download area. You’re forced to join their list after purchasing.

After that, merchants will send further information and promotional emails to their customers. This happens simply because people have already made any purchase are proven action takers and people who will spend money in what they want and love!

For your information, many buyers are repeat buyers! Meaning that, people might do some more purchases after that. People who love feng shui will always seek for more information, so they will spend money in it, again and again, as long as the interest doesn’t fade out. Hence, the only thing you need to do is promoting affiliate products!

What if you don’t have any product to sell?

You might be asking this question. This is very simple actually. Your aim now is to build a list of proven action takers. You need them to make any purchase before subscribing into your list. You don’t have to spend a lot of time on this; of course you don’t have to worry about this too!

PLR (Private Label Rights), RR (Resell Rights) and MRR (Master Resell Rights) products have saved you A LOT of time! Now you can get some PLR, RR and MRR products with nicely designed sales pages! It’ll be the best if you can get a PLR ebook in Microsoft Word file and a sales page. You can edit the ebook by inserting your affiliate links as well as put your name as the author.

  1. Ya… ur right giving freebies will attract freebies seekers, here’s a trick or you can say a tip to find out whether or not this dude who sign up for your free stuff is a buyer, all you have to do is give away a free report or a free newsletter that’s actually a long sales letter that tell them to buy something.
For example, a report on “how to start a blog”…. in the report you can write everything you know about starting a blog and in within the report you can tell them, “hey, if you want to take your blogging to the next level, you should have a unique blog design that will make your blog image looks good, here’s the blog theme that I have use for a very long time… and blah…. blah… blah….”
And what’s the blah… blah… blah….? Well… they are sales pitch that tell them how good the product you are promoting as an affiliate.
And of course… you can use a bribe for your product, tell them to send you the receipt through your email after they buy… and once they send their receipt to you… you will send them another opt-in form telling them to sign up to get the bribe….
And… well you have got one buyer in your new “buyer list”
    Go figure….

Very interesting post, Jeen, because you present a total different point of view in list building. However, I feel your point may not be correct.

I have seen a lot of cases affiliates present something for free to attract people and present the upsell to them and it works really well. Let me tell you why. It’s because people who subscribe to the list are truly interested into the products. If they aren’t interested then how can they subscribe into the list, right? Many bloggers also use this method as well, like this blog, for example.

You can present something for sale. However, how can you attract people to subscribe to your list if you present something not unique, something not yours for sale and how can people trust you? It takes a long time to establish trust and authority so that people can trust you and purchase products from you. Now if you are new and your blog just operates for several months, I’m not sure your method would work.

Now if you are an affiliates for years, that’s a different story. Of course at this time you probably know how to deal business and even have your own product to sale so that you can build a list without the freebies. This is not a mistake :) It’s a gradual process that people should take in order to become a big affiliate.

Well, what about JV giveaways? It’s pretty much like a market place for freebies, but the people who come tend to be marketers themselves. If you have a quality enough gift, I think they would be inclined to know more about the sale.

I do see your point about trying to get a buyer first and then subscribing, but if you get a PLR article that’s been around and try to sell it, and it’s substandard, you may not have a person in your list for long.

So I think it’s a combination of providing value and providing a good product. Continue to test.

A very interesting post Jeen. I think there are various opinions on ways of building a list. Some will say give things for free first before selling to them. Your post tend to agree more on looking for those who are ready to take out their wallets. You might disagree with me on this but it is still more effective to offer something for free in the early stages before moving on to selling. You need to allow time for your subscribers to build trust in what you are doing before they decide to buy something from you.

I agree with you on the part where you said that buyers will be buyers again.

As the good plan, you should to give stuff for free at the first time. Just give up and building your subscribers list that will help you make money later.

  6. Andreas from Online Advertising says:

Its always a good idea to focus on prospective buyers and clients who have already spend or are known to spend money on products and services within the target niche. The same applies to twitter followers and other social media list networks.

  7. Well everyone, here is a clarification.

In the first few paragraphs, I did mention that building lists by giving free stuff works.
I don’t neglect the power of freebies.

However, the “list building” mistake that I’m trying to bring out here, is the big picture of list building. It includes everyone, include people who just get started and people who have already made a lot of money online.

There are two different applied ideas here.

If you’re building a list by giving something free, your next step will be persuading your subscribers to take out their wallet.

Another idea, which is the one I am talking in this post, is that we let people who have already taken out their wallet to take out their wallet again.

Both of them work. What I’m trying to mention here is something like:
It takes a lot of time and effort to persuade 1,000 people to take out their wallet. However, persuading 100 people who have already taken out their wallet to take out their wallet again can be easier. The only tough part is you’ve to spend some effort to get them taking out their wallet at the first time.

“Get rid of freebies seekers – Build a buyer list!”

Amen! Getting names by offering freebies is a sort of bait-and-switch operation. Offering free stuff, then asking to buy stuff lacks integrity. Getting folks to make a purchase is a much better way to build a loyal following of people.
