A couple weeks ago, WordPress team released WordPress 3.0 but I didn’t upgrade immediately because an upgrade like this will always bring along many bugs, so I waited for awhile and heard the feedback from people who upgraded to WordPress 3.0. Eventually, WordPress team had fixed all the bugs in WordPress 3.0 and released WordPress 3.0.1 on 29th July 2010. That was a brilliant upgrade as WordPress team fixed 54 bugs and most of them came from WordPress 3.0.
WordPress 3.0 hit 11 million downloads in just 42 days as stated by WordPress team, so you can imagine how many people are using WordPress blogging platform, I’m proud to be one of them.
How I Upgraded from WordPress 2.9.1 to WordPress 3.0.1?
Usually I don’t simply upgrade to the latest version unless I really need the latest version of wordpress to be capable with some plugins or some other features, otherwise I’ll wait another upgraded version instead of the beta version. I’ve just hired a designer to design an unique Thesis Skin for this blog, I worry that the thesis skin that the designer create doesn’t capable with the WP version, so I upgraded to WordPress 3.0.1 just now before anything happens in coming days.
Before I upgraded this blog to the latest WordPress version 3.0.1, I upgraded one of my blogs to see was there anything happened. Everything looked great and I went ahead and upgraded for this blog. Remember, be sure you BACKUP your blog and database before hitting the “Upgrade” button.
Normally I’ll download the whole wordpress file from FTP and save in local disk, backup the database as well. Nevertheless, the network is kinda slow and I was lazy to download the whole wordpress file in several hours or a day, so I backup the database and hit the “Upgrade” button. Thanks god, everything was running smooth!
First Bugs Found In WordPress 3.0.1
This blog is running Thesis Theme Version 1.7, one of my blog buddies told me few weeks ago that he had problem with the “Custom File Editor” after upgrading to WordPress 3.0. I did a check on the “Custom File Editor” after upgrading to WordPress 3.0.1. This is the error message that I have:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function use_codepress() in /home/simon82/public_html/myblog2day.com/wp-content/themes/thesis_17/lib/admin/admin.php on line 42
Thesis team was releasing the latest Thesis Version 1.8 a couple weeks ago, I’m going to upgrade to Thesis Version 1.8 and see whether it’s capable with WordPress 3.0.1. I’ll keep you guys update. If you’re still in WordPress 3.0 or below, you can now upgrade to WordPress 3.0.1 safely by hitting the “Upgrade” button in your wordpress cpanel.
Thesis Theme is the finest wordpress theme that I’ve seen so far and I’m proud to be one of the Thesis users. You may consider using Thesis Theme for your wordpress blog as well.
Download Thesis Theme Version 1.8
Have you upgraded your wordpress blog to WordPress 3.0.1? Did you experience any bugs?

Hi Lee,
Fantastic post and I meant it. Need your advice here. I have a blog running on a very old wordpress theme. Here is the link – http://www.jeffreyblogonline.com. The thing here is, I am worried once I upgrade it to the latest version, I might lose most of the posts or maybe something else. You mention it safe to upgrade it but anything else that I should know. I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.
Just to point out that the reason I am putting the link is not to get an Il. Hope you understand. No problem if you delete this comment.
Hey, thanks again for this wonderful post.

Is it safe?
Thanks and going to read up the other posts of this blog. Kill up the time since I’m off for the day.

Hi,
I agree with you, I didn’t always upgrade my blog after an update has been released. But looking the list of the bugs have been fixed, maybe I will upgrade as well.

@Colleen,
Yeah Colleen, I believe that Thesis 1.8 has fixed the bug, I’ll need to upgrade and see whether it’s working.
Lovely to see they fixing errors, but too bad they are releasing too many fixes in such small periods of time.
Ditto that thought! I’m wondering if fixing too many bugs at one time will create a whole new set of bugs.

@Colleen,
Bugs will be always appeared along the ways, so the previous bugs must be fixed too. I don’t see any problem with that. lol!
@Daniel,

Yea, I believe that it can be fixed with Thesis 1.8. I’ll upgrade and see whether it works or not. Nevertheless, I rarely use custom code editor to edit the code, usually I’ll edit the code in local disk and upload to FTP.

@Febap Liew,
Cool! So have you upgraded your blog to Wordpress 3.0.1 Febap?
I should’ve waited until 3.0.1 to upgrade as well. I upgraded one of my blogs right away and there were bugs immediately. Perhaps it was just caused by my custom theme, but after updating all my posts disappeared from my blog’s homepage.
@Jeremy,
Too bad to hear that. So did you fix the problem already Jeremy?
I always update my blog to latest version when it available. No waiting for anything. Just for be sure.

@Tony,
I’ll wait after the beta version. Normally the jumped version (2.9, 3.0, 3.1, etc.) might has many bugs which they have yet to fix, so I’ll always wait for another version.
Hi Lee,
This is always a beneficial for the WP users to upgrade to the newer version because this can help out the people for not falling into the bug trap of older versions.
I liked your idea of waiting for a little and getting the reviews from the people who have upgraded.
Thanks for this informative post.
I think sometimes with upgrades regardless of programs or software or Wordpress, I will feel a little bit of trepidation upgrading just in case something about my blog gets screwed up. But I’m glad things with WordPress 3.0.1 are working well so far. Yeah about Thesis, I’m definitely considering getting it.

@Bryan,
Yes I have the same feeling with you Bryan, I was pretty worried when I upgraded my blog, I just hate to waste few hours time to just find out the problem and solution to fix the bugs. I experienced it before and it was killing me. Anyway, upgrading to wordpress 3.0.1 was just going smooth for me. You may consider using Thesis, it’s a great theme! Contact me if you would like to get a best deal Bryan.
3.01? i havent upgraded to 3.0 needed more time to look over all my current installed plugins, which i did not do yet
@gagaukon,
You may first upgrade all your plugins and then go for WP upgrade, then you’ll get everything up to-date. Spend some times and upgrade them, Wordpress 3.0.1 fixed a lot of bugs.
One bug I seem to be experiencing in 3.0.1 (that I didn’t experience in 3.0 or earlier versions) is that the quick install for themes and plug-ins seems to bring about a lot of errors. Specifically, I have tried uploading between 6 and 8 themes over the last few days and have received errors like “Theme Broken, No Style Sheet Found.” The strange thing about this is that I can look inside of the theme files myself and see the style sheet as well as other necessary css files. I have also opened these css files in jedit to ensure they actually contain something and they’re fine. But I’ve gotten that error on about 6 themes so far.
When that’s not happening, it’s giving me the error message “Are you sure you want to do that?” and a link to try again (when I try installing a theme from the WP admin area). I’ve never had such issues installing themes before, and I’m fairly certain it’s not the themes themselves. I highly doubt that 8 themes (some of which are premium themes made for 3.0) would all be broken.
Anyone have any idea how to get around this? I’ve tried installing via FTP also, but that just gave other errors.
